I still don't understand why anatomical correctness is a prerequisite for anything lol

it's....not?
it's just part of the flow of things. Stylistic choices usually don't consist of
"I'm drawing hyper realism but when I draw a character from behind their head will turn in such a way that it would normally be considered broken or dislocated"
they are usually
"i draw eyes a certain way"
"i utilise line weight a certain way"
tim burton has a style
pokemon has a style
When we talk about style, you don't note girls with swivel waists and rubber spines as a style choice when the artist chooses to draw in a way that leans towards realism and away from cartoon. Anatomical correctness isn't a prerequisite so much as an expectation. You don't expect adventure time characters to animate in a realistic manner, but you do expect Naruto's arms to bend in a realistic way. So when an artist draws in a realistic way, referencing REAL people and LIVE models, you expect them to also hold their anatomy to that standard. If Reiq drew his characters with 3 fingers on each hand instead of 5 you wouldn't say "style choice" you would say "bad anatomy" simple as that.

I think she is pointing more the fact of anatomical rules, physical rules, not realism but anatomy, mmmm If I could remember some some artist that draw so apart from reality, yet its so anatomically correct, sorry for not being able

That could just be style. Many artists draw characters with eyes that are 4x too big or with unbelievably tiny bodies and big heads... But it isn't screwed up anatomy, it is their style... But there are some times where you just screwed up

I think theres a difference between stylistic exaggeration of limbs vs unintentional exaggeration. for example You have shows like Edd Ed n Eddy. Their limbs bend like noodles and can be literally flattened. But you wouldn't comment on it because everything else fits, they are meant to be outlandish, nothing about them is really realist at all. But when you have an artist like reiq who draws realistic style pinups, you can't really attribute it to style choice. If you watch a cartoon like Edd Ed n Eddy and they get tied in a knot together, its normal. But if you watch a show like Batman and all of a sudden his body starts doing things as if he was in an Edd Ed n Eddy universe, you would be like wtf, arms have elbows. Deciding to draw semi-realistic is a style choice. Defying anatomic ability so that you can see the underside of a girls ass while looking at the top of her breasts is not. It's just interesting because watching him practice gestures and talk about using real life references, many of his artwork show women doing things average people can't physically do (no i'm not talking about laser beams) i'm talking about the contorting of the spine so that you can get tit and ass cleavage within one picture and one subject.

It also can attribute to the whole "sex sells" thing. I have seen so many comics by Frank Miller where he has women standing in a posting that while it looks provocative, it is also physically impossible because of how they would twist their spine or how they were bended... It annoys me to no end, and he is supposed to be a professional...

It's a very true myth sadly, but luckily it doesn't work on everyone

No no I mean really.
it's a myth. People continue to promote and believe it does and therefore they continue to do it, but studies have shown that sex can sell nothing but sex www.spring.org.uk/2007/06/sex-…

I only ask because I want to do digital sketching, but I cant get nice smooth lines. So either I need to upgrade my tablet (its a Wacom bamboo fun) or I need to use a different program besides PhotoShop CS3. Any thoughts?

This is really awesome. I love how at the beginning of the drawing it looks kind of weird, but you place a line or two and it's perfect. I feel like I learned a lot and now I'm jazzed up to go try some stuff!

I always start from head, sometimes from torso. But I fell I have better control if I start from the head first.
Usually I decided proportions before starting to draw.

every time i get into a funk with drawing its because of the same thing and i always COMPLETELY look past it. for some reason, after a few very successful drawings, i get a bit over confident and start drawing from the head down (but adding all of the facial details first. then i lose what i had pictured in my mind for the final composition after not getting something "right" right away). while theres nothing wrong with that, because i have had some success starting off that way and everybody draws differently, i've had far more success starting with the form and working my way out. so thank you for the reminder! i might actually try to draw something today.... MIGHT....

Thanks a lot for sharing! I really liked how you were braking the human form into basic forms and shapes. I also found it rather interesting that you generally start from the torso and then make your way around adding other body parts. Most other artists I have watched tend to start with the head. I have to say your method seems to make the most sense of all of them!

reiq In reply to endave [2013-12-10 14:34:25 +0000 UTC]
I used to start from the head but it leads to confusion really quick, because it's like drawing the top of a tower without knowing the rest of the design.

I noticed that too when I started doing more life drawings. Drawing the head first would start off fine, but as I worked on other parts of the body, my proportions would get way off. When I draw the torso, that doesn't happen as much.
