Perched on a hill overlooking the city ruins, Rook watched the morning sun rise on the ashes of his new kingdom. With the Prophets eliminated from the picture, nearly everything the sun touched was his. Another dawn, another day... another step closer for what he longed for most... Natalia. A pang of guilt ripped through his chest like a dagger and he hunched forward at the sensation. Rook saw Aspen's green eyes flash in his mind for a moment, stricken with fear and betrayal as he left her burn with the others. She was becoming too important to him... her presence wove doubt and denial into his life's purpose. Would he just let everything he had built up for that cause crumble at her feet? No, he wouldn't allow it. She made him feel weak... and as much as he buried the feelings that had developed for Aspen, it was too much of a threat to his own ambitions. He couldn't let his life become a lie.

The sound of paw steps approaching lifted Rook from the storm brewing in his mind and he straightened himself up. "Blaze," He addressed the newcomer with the flick of his ear. A moment of silence carried on the breeze between them before he spoke again. "Is she gone?" Rook was nearly sure of the answer, but asked as more of a formality. He also needed that closure of hearing it from someone else. "Everything has been burnt to ash, sir," Blaze meowed in an even tone.

Rook stared out at the ruins, hoping to be filled with pride and triumph, but all he was met with was resounding emptiness. "It had to be done..." he meowed in almost a whisper.

This scene takes place right after Rook attempts to kill Aspen, and before she reaches the gates to Paradise. Rook believes that his attempt has been successful, but is now dealing with some unforeseen emotions about the whole ordeal.

I'm going to be following his story in the Wastelands while events continue to take place in the Trials! Mostly because I love Rook and have some fun plans for him...
