I had this laying around for a couple of years and, well, it is Shark Week after all...Plus I really hate that sponge.

There was that lovely, sad ending in Pan's Labyrinth for one.

And you'd perfer that over the shark being blown up? Well, okay. But the ending of Jaws didn't have to be sad; save for the loss of Quint. And he has gone through a lot in his life; first he becomes stranded out in the middle of the Pacific, several of his crewmates are killed by sharks, one of his old friends is bitten in half, and he waits a very long time for him to be picked up. He swears he'll never put on another life jacket and I think part of the reason why we like this character for being so tough is he has had a traumatic experience and that is why he wants to kill sharks; for each and every of his friends who have died at the teeth of these creatures. But in the end, Quint ultimately dies because of his thirst for vengenance.
But at least he is mourned by Hooper and Brody; "Quint..." "No." And the music just soothes your soul knowing that the shark will no longer terrorize Amity Island again and the long journey that the two take back home swimming.

Yeah, I would. I guess what I really didn't like was that sharks aren't THAT violent. Well...Depends actually. Anyway, there can be no true vengeance upon a witless beast.

Now I see where you're going. When the movie was released in 1975, people were so scared of going into the ocean and people started to kill sharks for that. The author of Jaws, Peter Benchly, said that he wouldn't have written the novel had he known what sharks were really like in the wild. He later wrote the book Shark Troubles about the behaviors of sharks and Shark Life when he went diving into the sea with them.
I don't think that the problem is the film, but the audience's reaction to it. And I am impressed with Spielberg's camera work and lighting techniques. I think the main point to remember about this is that Jaws is only a movie. I think you don't like it because of the depiction of sharks, but it is only part of the conflicts that Brody goes through. He also wants to keep his sons safe, like yelling at Michael to get out of the water; he has to deal with Mayor Vaughn trying to cover up the attacks; and ultimately, stopping the shark before it kills more people. I still maintain it is a great movie, but your just not into killer sharks. I think that instead of saying that Jaws is a bad moive, it's just not your cup of tea. I'm not saying this to anatagonize you; I just think that in case some fanatic of the movie comes and assaults you with your lack of tastes- which I think you have fine tastes. You've upheld a quite strong argument and I am impressed.
