About:
Rayadillo (rayados or milraya) literally translates to 'thousand stripes' and is the standard uniform issued to Spanish forces stationed in tropical regions in the Far East, most probably a copy of the duck uniform used by British sailors at the time. It is distinctly identified with its blue and white striped fabric and seen from afar, would usually appear grayish blue in color.
Featured is most probably one of the many that were ransacked from Spanish garrisons, identifiable with its two breast pockets at the front. The standard issue Rayadillo of the Philippine Revolutionary army would later evolve and would have defining differences with the Spanish issue guerrera or with others such as the Latin guayabera. This is so because it was later patterned after the British Norfolk jacket, a type of English hunting jacket of the period. This is identified with its standing collar (unlike the Spanish type that is usually turned-down) and vertical breast pocket that are concealed along two broad bands running vertically across the shoulders to the hem.
The regular Filipino infantryman wore the rayadillo uniform along with a broad brimmed hat with the front pinned with the triangular badge of the Republic and a cockade consisting of a silver triangle pinned to a red and blue cloth along a black strip on the side. Collar insignia to denote branch of service, though existent is rarely seen or worn. Ranks on shoulder boards also seem to be a rarity. Accouterments and weapons include the obsolete Remington 'rolling-block' rifle or the Spanish Mauser rifle. Most infantrymen especially those on lower ranks usually prefer to fight barefoot, with footwear only necessary on practical occasions.
