The gentle whirring of machines were almost dulled under the sound of approaching footsteps tap tap tapping on the tiles floors. Curiosity killed the cat? Not if the cat had a gun! He couldn’t tear his eyes away from the sight as he walked by, the green glow captivating the man as he approached it. Some kind of metal enclosure sat in the room, surrounded by screens, and a control panel sat in front of it. Wires and tubes ran into the pod, attaching to the creature inside…
it was almost like the room was breathing.
He slowly raised his arm, pressing his palm to the glass… the creature was a little big bigger, but it didn't look completley finished, if that was even the right term. It didn’t look like a robot, it looked…alive. Whatever it was, it was hardly even bigger than his hand… Did it have the capability to grow? Eric had plenty of questions. It looked like the starts of an human. Was this what babies looked like in the womb? Eric didn’t want to think about it. It looked painful. Its skin was still forming, and it was clearly missing a lot of its organs, that were exposed against the liquid in the enclosure it was trapped in. Eric winced at the slight. He wasn’t one for empathy, not even towards children, but the thought of his organs being exposed was a painful thought indeed.

He wondered if it was aware. Was it angry at its predicament, or was it docile? Eric assumed the latter. Why would it be angry if it knew of nothing better? Maybe it would be angry in future if it ever got the privilege of knowledge, but for now, Eric assumed that the creature was oblivious. Something about it resonated. The obliviousness…

It looked like a child. Not some malicious bioweapon or monster…

It's heart was beating, but slowly. Eric thought it was dead, or rather, not yet alive. That was until he saw the little heart pulse once, before the creature fell back into a stony, seemingly lifeless state.

It's eyes were open, and it’s mouth hung open as if it had a dislocated jaw. The creature had no pupils, but the more time Eric spent in its company, the more he got the lingering feeling that it was watching him. The longer he stood there, the more he noticed the subtle swish of its hair in the green goo, and the way its mouth slightly moved, not even an inch. It was hardly noticeable, but it was there. The indication of breathing, yet the lungs never moved. There was only one lung from what Eric could see, so maybe it breathed through other means? could that be what the tubes were for…?

Eric had so many questions, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to ask. He had no knowledge of the complexities of creating life. He usually ended it after all, so the knowledge of birth wasn’t exactly information he needed. Paragon and its processes were unethical at best, but he never really cared. He was too busy trying to avoid death, so walking into situations like this was never a good idea. From what he had heard, Paragon had only successfully created one other living being from scratch. This seemed to be the second, but in saying that, the creature itself seemed like it was on the brink of death.

The feeling of discomfort grew, and with that, Eric decided that he’d had enough. He stepped back, sparing the creature behind the glass one final glance, before leaving the room. He felt an ounce of unease and regret, looking over his shoulder as he briskly walked down the hall. He still felt like he was being watched, but maybe it was the paranoia that had grasped onto his consciousness like a leech.

Eric felt like he’d witnessed something he really shouldn’t have.
