I use a Nikon D80 and for my most of my (macro) photography I use my Nikkor 105mm VR IF f2.8 (it's really expensive, had to save up for it!) but if you want a cheap lens (which i'm going to buy next week) which works just as well, go for the 50mm f1.8 as it's supersharp and functions great in low light Also, you can get a very nice dof (depth of field; which is very important to make the background ncie and blurry!)
I don't have many special settings, i usually put the "A" (aperture) very low (to get that nice dof) and then the camera does the rest in getting the right shutterspeed (try to keep your ISO around 200 so there is less grain in the pic). No filters are needed, just photoshop or lightroom to process the images (there you can change colours, tones, contrast etc).
I'm not sure if i make any sense but don't hesitate to ask anything!
