Herculaneum was destroyed by a pyroclastic cloud erupted from the Mt Vesuvius on 25 August 79 CE. The eruption began the day before, with only light ash falling on Herculaneum Pompeii was buried by the ash fall of 24 August. The day of grace allowed Pliny the Elder, who commanded the roman fleet at Misenum, to evacuate most of the inhabitants. His actions and the details of the eruption were described by his nephew< Pliny the Younger, in two letters to the historian Tacitus.
