Software Introduction Week
Adobe InDesign is a very powerful layout software. You can create anything from flyers to entire books. However, the interface can seem quite overwhelming, so it's hard to know where to start. With this article I want to make creating your own layouts with InDesign a little less daunting. I'll cover all the basics, including how to set up your workspace, an explanation of the most important tools, and basic functions you can use to layout.
Since this is an introduction to InDesign, aimed at total beginners, I will focus on explaining the basic basics. I'll take you through InDesign up to the first steps of creating your own layout, but I can't explain every single tool or command, and going into more detail about how to actually create layouts in InDesign would also be too much for this article. But since there's a serious lack of InDesign tutorials on DA I might just contribute a few more in the future.
Let's get started!
1. Creating a new document
- Before we can really do anything, we need to create a new document. The first time you open InDesign, you'll get a lot of pop-ups. Feel free to read through all of them - or ignore them if you want to get going quicker.
- There are two ways to create a new document: when first opening InDesign through the "Create new..." button, or through File > New...
- No matter which option you choose, you'll get a screen with lots of numbers and drop-downs. First, you can either choose your format from a number of presets by clicking through the Print, Web, etc. tabs on the top, or you can put in individual dimensions.
- Important numbers to adjust to your needs here are:
- Pages: number of pages in your document
- Facing Pages: check this box if you want a double-page spread
- Columns: number of columns on your page(s)
- You'll also need to open the "Margins" and "Bleed and Slug" drop-down menus:
- Margins: adjust the margins of your page(s)
- Bleed and Slug: You probably won't need the slug (an area that contains information, usually for the printer), but bleed is incredibly important if you're doing a layout for print. The bleed is needed to account for slight inaccuracies while trimming, so that when you have text/images that extend right to the edge of your document (wouldn't advise that for regular text but that's another topic entirely) you won't get weirdly cut-off text/images. I usually set my bleed to 3 or 4 mm on all sides (0.1 inch to 0.15 inch). In your document you'll see the bleed as a red line around all your pages.
- Once you're satisfied with your settings, hit "Create"!
2. Adjusting the InDesign setup
- The first thing to do after you create your document is to adjust the InDesign settings to what works best for you.
- Preferences: Go to Edit > Preferences. You probably won't need to change much at first, but a few things you should look at are:
- Interface: to adjust the colour theme
- Units and Increments: to make sure you have the right measurement units
- Grids: I like to change Baseline Grid to 14 pt
- You might also want to adjust and choose windows according to your needs. If you want to layout a book, I recommend choosing the "Book" workspace from the dropdown menu in the top right corner (next to the search bar - it will be set to "Essentials" when using InDesign for the very first time). You can add and remove windows and also move the panels around. As you work with InDesign more, you'll figure out what you'll need to access quickly and what you don't need that often. My setup usually looks something like this:
- A must is also to go to Type > Show Hidden Characters (Ctrl+Alt+I), especially if you're going to work with a lot of text. The symbols you will now see might be a bit confusing, so here's a short overview of the most common ones:
- If they're not there already, make sure to hit Ctrl+R to show rulers. And while you're at it, go to View > Grids and Guides and make sure that right at the top it says "Hide guides" (because that means you'll be able to see guides you create), that "Intelligent Guides" is checked, and to click on "Show Baseline Grid".
- Once you're happy with your workspace, you can save it by going to Window > Workspace > New Workspace..., type in a name for your workspace, and make sure both boxes are checked to save both your current panel locations and the current set of menus.
3. Tools
- You can find the tool bar on the left. Here's a quick explanation of the most important tools:
Most of the tools have their own keyboard shortcut. If you're familiar with Photoshop and/or Illustrator, you'll know a few of these already, but some will be entirely new (and maybe weird) to you. If you'd like to change any of the existing shortcuts, or add your own to things that don't have them already, you can do so under Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts. Here are a few more (keyboard) shortcuts that can help speed up your process:
4. Control Panel
- The control panel is right at the top of InDesign. It can be a bit confusing at first, since it changes depending on what you have selected. But it's really handy because it gives you information on what you selected, like an object's placement on the page and its dimensions, or a text's alignment and spacing.
- Text Control Panel: This is what the control panel looks like when you click into text or have text selected. You can change the type, its colour, alignment, and have various other options to adjust its appearance, like kerning and tracking. Play a bit with the options to see how you can change text appearance!
- Object Control Panel: This is what the control panel looks like when you select an object, like a text/image frame. You can change the object's position, size, and orientation, among other things.
Now that we have the workspace down, let's do some layouting!
5. Your First Layout
- You already created a new document right in the beginning. You can still change the number of pages, the dimensions of the pages, and more, but for now we'll stick to what we already have.
- Want to see what your document would look like without all the guidlines and frames? Simply hit the "W" key to change the screen mode to "Preview"!
- Text:
- In order to write text, simply press the "T" key, which enables you to draw a text box. You can also copy-paste text into an existing text box - if you paste a text without an existing text box InDesign will automatically generate one wherever, usually right where you don't want it.
- If you have text that's too long for your current text box, a red "+" will appear in a small box at the bottom right corner of your text box. Click on that box with the Selection tool (V) and click either on where you want the text to continue, or into another text box, if you have one. The text boxes will be connected and the text will automatically continue in that new text box.
- Images:
- In order to place an image, press Ctrl+D and select the image you want from your computer. If you selected a frame beforehand, the image will be placed inside the frame. If not, a new frame will be created automatically.
- If you only see a pixelated image, it might be because display performance is set to "Typical Display". To change that, go to View > Display Performance and select "High Quality Display". If you have a lot of high-res pictures in your layout, I would leave it at "Typical Display" while layouting, only switching to "High Quality" once you're relatively sure of being close to done. The reason for this is that it would take much more of your computer's processing power to load them all in high quality - InDesign might start to lag and, in the worst case, it could even stop working altogether.
- You can transform the image frame and the image seperately from each other. By clicking on the frame itself, you can transform it without touching the image. By clicking on the circle inside the frame you'll get access to the image without changing the frame. If you want to transform both at the same time, you can do so by pressing Ctrl+Shift while clicking on the frame, and holding it while you use your mouse/tablet pen for the transformation.
