Description The Roanu Loop
Mixed Media

This is the outcome of my mild obsession with traditional art and craft. The painting is my attempt to do a painting based on traditional stone carving patterns used over years and I was awed by how symmetric and precise the traditional designs were; mine no where near the true depth of talent of Maldivian craftsman displayed in many ancient stones mostly now found in various mosques. I have added a bit of designs inspired by the coir rope.

Stone carvings are made by raw corals and the designs are found on ancient burial stones and mosques. These methods existed as early as the Buddhist period and continued until the introduction of masonry in the late 18th century. It is great to see few artists who are now trying to revive this amazing method of art

Coir rope is another form of Maldivian artwork that is known as “roanu veshun” It takes a lot of patience and time to put the art to perfection. Coconut husk is first buried in the beach within the reach of waves and left to soak for a month or so. It is then dug up and beaten with a wooden club, which separates the fiber. The fiber is then washed with seawater, dried in the sun and rolled into slabs. After that, the fiber are spun into rope by hand
