Description I have to admit, I don't use photo references often since I don't necessary want a realist anatomy/feeling.
It's not the only way either, but it's probably the simplest one to my opinion.

The point of this process is to show how can you emphasize the silhouette and anatomy while staying "close to reality" and give a more "Anime" feeling. First, DON'T TRACE !!!! or you won't ( with difficulty ) fly away from reality

1. Shape, don't wreck your brain on that one, just draw the very basic silhouette.
2. Now you can wreck your brain XD I articulate the body like BJD/an articulated puppet. You don't have to stick 100% to the photo.
3. Simply showing the contour. That's the lines you will follow for drawing socks, shorts, gloves ect...  It's not necessary but still showing it XD

4. Finally drawing the body
5. Tada !! You've drawn a body from a photo reference !!!!
6. Putting clothes on it.
7. And some colors, Finis ! 0v0

Reference used for this step by step :   by pyjama-cake

Once your brain and hand have done those steps for long enough you will naturally skip some steps. I, for example, go directly from step 1 to step 5 because I'm used to it. It's difficult to explain but it's gotten instinctive, practice and repetition is the key of learning >0v0<

Don't repost, ect ...
If it's not useful to you or don't like it rather than ranting on it : then thank you for passing by, BYE BYE
Don't forget I don't have any obligation whatsoever to post ressources, tutorials, references or anything else of the kind 0V0

I feel dumb, because this made me realize the importance of each shape of an art dummy, especially the ball point between the chest and hips.

Might just drop the triangle shapes I've been using. I knew I needed to stop using them, but now I know why; it's no wonder I couldn't get exact torso lengths right. Thanks for posting this!

Actually if I were to place the triangles shape in my steps, It would be step 1, I think you've just be messing a step

I haven't thought about using triangles to help structure the base figure, instead of the whole subject. Thanks for the insight, I'm going to give it a try tomorrow.

Wouldn't be the first time I've missed a step. Once did an entire art lesson with all the steps in reverse when I was a teenager.

Very useful technique. I used to do the same but only with face expressions and arms positioning.

You're welcome XD
It's actually something my aunt ( who is an art teacher ) taught me especially because I had the tendency to details too much my rough sketches
If there are more ressources I can make that would be useful, don't hesitate to let me know

IlluminatedTears In reply to rika-dono [2015-02-13 17:35:22 +0000 UTC]

You could maybe do something like, how you do line art, or how you do faces, or how you do coloring ,u,

(I'm really bad at doing line art, as you most likely saw from my Bonnie drawing, it just look too pixelated and I can't make it look right, an my coloring... well it changes from time to time and I can never figure out a good way to do it xS)

rika-dono In reply to IlluminatedTears [2015-02-13 17:44:52 +0000 UTC]

First, is the bonnie drawing canvas size the one you used ?
I usually use a canvas : 1500x2000px , resolution : 100px for my drawings, as for the rest, I don't use photoshop so I wouldn't be much help. Maybe play with your tool options
For the coloring, the best would be to work on your lineart first. Then when you think you're lineart is good enough, you can try this kind of shading :   As you can see it's not actually shaded it's just a gradient. You will learn how to use colors together from it.
Once all that is done, I think a coloring method proper to you will naturally appear
Hope I was able to help you 0V0

IlluminatedTears In reply to rika-dono [2015-02-13 17:52:30 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, I guess the canvas size really matters that much, I used rather small one, but I'll try using huge one (this is going to be horrible xD), and thank you for the coloring advice quq
This really helps me, hetting tips from one of my favorite artist gives me motivation and maked me happy and thanks to you, I've improved more in a week than I have in half a year x3

I also realized you have a lot of "photo" of mmd models. You can use those to practice you lineart, you lower the opacity and "trace" them. Since you don't have to think of the composition, sketch, anatomy, what to draw ect... It would be a good exercise. You can also take sketchs from other people ( with their consent and proper credit ) to work on it

thank you so much for the advice! :3

Actually most of the artist I follow (who have better computers than mine ) use twice the size I use, but it's too much for my poor laptop XD
No problem, it makes me happy to know what I do is useful to someone

I use a laptop too, but I don't draw at home so much. I'm going to build a computer for myself at some point, but not now. I use the macs my school has to draw, macs are confusing but I can handle it xD

MonToothComics [2015-02-13 13:35:02 +0000 UTC]

my method is similar to that but i go strait to step 2 with sculpting the body because guidelines always throw me off. as a person that loves sketching with ball point pens i like the way you broke it down.

rika-dono In reply to Hyenax [2015-02-13 12:21:29 +0000 UTC]
