The wet, miserable squeak and scatter of clumped sand under hooves joined the sound of creaking saddles and the light patter of rain across the outdoor arena. There was an occasional splash as the only two pairs in the warm-up ring trotted through puddles, sending cascades of water and clusters of footing flying and coating the bellies and legs of the horses. The pair at the far end picked up a canter and the rider indicated that they would take a line to the set of meter-high jumps in the middle.
Cal squinted against the stinging rain as he turned Rocket towards the combination. The mare's canter quickened slightly, her head coming up at the sight of the jumps in her path. Cal half-halted and her pace steadied somewhat, hooves churning the sodden ground. She sprung over the first fence easily, taking two strides and popping the second. She kept her rhythm as she landed, and Cal smiled wanly. Cold and wet as he was, he took a moment to appreciate how far Rocket had come this season. A year ago she would have been rushing her jumps, and now he barely had to adjust her. It seemed their constant training had paid off.
They turned again towards the jumps, this time a dog-leg of uprights set six strides apart. Again, Rocket took them well, landing with a grunt and a splash after the second. Cal slowed her to a trot, continuing along the outside track. Any other time, he’d have walked Rocket until their bell rang, but in this weather he wanted them both to stay warm. He took a hand off the reins to adjust the raincoat he’d thrown on over his show jacket, regretting it immediately as a trickle of icy water ran down his spine. He shuddered, still rising automatically to the trot. He’d be glad to be out of this rain.
The other pair had disappeared from the arena a moment prior, leaving them alone in the arena. Cal looked over towards the main ring. The rider on the grey mare had just miscalculated a turn and the horse had chipped a stride, knocking a pole from an oxer despite her best efforts to throw her heels up. A pair of poncho-wearing teenagers darted from the side of the ring to replace the pole, and Cal couldn’t help the grin that crossed his face as he though of his own days as an eager young working student, happy to do any task – heedless of pouring rain or scorching sun- for the chance to ride. These two reminded him of himself. The smile faded into a mask of concentration as the pair in the main ring flew over the last jump, and he unzipped his jacket, ready to toss onto a fencepost for the round.
They left the warmup and crossed quickly to the larger arena. Cal hung his jacket on the gate and nudged Rocket into a canter around the outside, taking stock of the flower and rain-themed jumps. He'd walked the course early this morning, before the rain had started - this was a course full of opportunities for technical turns and slicing jumps, but given Rocket's age and relative inexperience, he'd made the decision to just give her a solid round, especially in the weather conditions.
Their bell rang. Pink flowers, blue flowerbeds, sponsor upright, sponsor oxer, liverpool, Cal chanted in his head. The first half of the course was the trickiest, with a convoluted series of rollbacks- the rest of the course after the liverpool was fairly straightforward, with a triple combination and a final jump. Rocket's stride lengthened, and he half-halted automatically. Time to see how their training would apply on this course.

Sorry, cop-out ending, but I am t i r e d and also didn't think people would want to read a description of all the fences which is what it would have ended up being LOL
