I never really liked their original diadems... How are in two different techniques and really, have nothing in common.

So, they are supposed to be guardians, aren't they? And there's two of them, so logical conclusion -> one is guarding at day, the other at night. Star shining upon Earth being Dreams influence and personality, open and warm to everyone. The same way moon hovering over Earth, Nightmare unknown and dangerous in eyes of others, quiet but present.

Of course they were having some fun together at dawn and sunrise, when they were both awake. It get harder, as Dream was going to the village, but it wasn't the start of the bullying yet. Really, I think they could at first appreciate Nightmare looking over tree at night, maybe even a bit over the village. Kids will see his glowing eyes and get scared, and with time, the rumor will spread that there's a monster, living in a Tree which comes out at night.

And when villagers will become more greedy, and of course, Nightmare as the guardian won't let them just take the apples, then the problems will arise, and everything will go like in canon.
