Description
This full-scale replica of the Discovery's EVA Pod from 2001: A Space Odyssey was built by special effects artist Greg Nicotero for National Harbor's Escape Velocity 2018 convention. The Discovery carried three of these egg-shaped pods, which were called Alice, Betty and Clara in Arthur C. Clarke's novel but were just referred to as the pods in Stanley Kubrick's film. Unlike most small ships in science fiction, which tend to double as airplanes, it can only function as a short-range maintenance spacecraft, which makes it fairly realistic even if nothing like it has been built yet in the real world. Perhaps in the future if we reach out more into space...
