Description C-3PO the Cybot Galactica protocol droid and R2-D2 the Industrial Automaton astromech are the first two characters we meet in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and their bickering takes up a good part of the series.  They are the only two characters to have appeared in all the movies and been played by the same actors (Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker) every time, and were briefly the stars of a cartoon called Star Wars: Droids, where they traveled around the galaxy, going from master to master.

Their initial concepts by Ralph McQuarrie looked a bit different: C-3PO would looked much more feminine, like Maria from Fritz Lang's 1927 movie Metropolis, while R2-D2 would have rolled on a ball and had arms coming out of his head.  All of these elements would show up elsewhere: the feminine C-3PO concept was used for the LE-series manifest droid in the Marvel comics, while R2-D2's head-arms ended up on Chopper in Star Wars: Rebels, and the ball propulsion will be seen on BB-8 in Star Wars Episode VII: A New Hope.

These models of the two droids are on display at Shizuoka Hobby Square.
