Description The City and South London Railway was built with standard-gauge track, but the expense and difficulty of digging tunnels for the world's first all-electric deep-level Tube line meant the loading gauge (dimensions of rolling stock) was extremely restrictive.  This is shown at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden by CSLR bogie coach No. 10 (Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Company, 1890), a windowless "padded cell" that could easily be outsized by many narrow-gauge coaches.  The railway left windows off the original design as it thought there was nothing worth seeing in the tunnel, so train conductors had to announce the stations, but windows were later added at the turn of the century for the convenience of passengers.  The museum has restored the coach to its original windowless condition so visitors can get an impression of the original "padded cell" experience.
