Between the early resignation of North Eastern Railway locomotive superintendent Alexander McDonnell in 1884 and the appointment of his successor Thomas W. Wordsell in 1885, NER general manager Henry Tennant organized a committee to design a new express passenger steam locomotive, as McDonnell's Class 38 4-4-0 locomotives were failing to match the performance of Fletcher's capable old Class 901 2-4-0 locomotives. The committee quickly designed a new express 2-4-0, and Gateshead and Darlington each built ten Class 1463 locomotives. The first locomotive, No. 1463, spent a few years as a London and North Eastern Railway Class E5 locomotive before the LNER retired her in 1927 and had her preserved. She is now displayed at the Head of Steam Railway Museum at Darlington North Road Station in the same city where she was built. She is one of the few cases I can think of where something "designed by committee" turned out well.
