In 1970, Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh and Royal Navy veteran) established the Maritime Trust to preserve historic British ships. One of the ships saved by the Trust was Kathleen and May, a three-master topsail schooner built in Connah's Quay (Flintshire, Wales) in 1900 to carry coal across the Irish Sea. When I visited Liverpool, I saw Kathleen and May moored at Albert Dock in front of the Joseph Heap and Sons Ltd rice mill as a visitor from its home port of Bideford, Devonshire.
