Description
"Lethal, Survivable, Supportable, Affordable."
- JSF development program motto
The Lockheed Martin X-35C was the prototype for the U.S. Navy version of the "joint strike fighter" the Pentagon approved for mass production as the F-35 Lightning II. With larger wings and stronger landing gear than the Air Force F-35A but without the STOVL "jump jet" features of the Marine Corps F-35B, the F-35C is optimized for carrier-based operations. With flight testing complete, the X-35C is displayed the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum in Maryland. The same museum also contains the plane that lost to the X-35, the Boeing X-32.
