Description
The Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke has acquired a new steam locomotive, which is on loan from the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri. It is Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W) Y6a-class 2-8-8-2 Mallet articulated compound locomotive No. 2156, built by the N&W Roanoke locomotive works in 1942. As it is not in steam, it had to be towed a thousand miles from St. Louis to Roanoke, a journey that was broadcast on the Internet by the Norfolk Southern Railway. After No. 2156 reached Roanoke, ex-N&W ALCO T6 diesel switcher No. 41 shunted the 500-ton locomotive into the railyard, where it is now on display.Related content

You have no idea how badly I wanted to see that come into Columbus.
Trouble was that it came through on my last week of school...

The last time I saw her was in 2010(?). She is absolutely massive. Back in the mid-80s, NS actually considered restoring 2156 before they restored 1218, but MoT said "no" (for obvious reasons). I believe the Y6a's top speed of 40 MPH also played a factor
So-o-o-o-o...SOU 630 came back, then SOU 4501 came back, and now N&W 611 has returned. "FireUp1361", anybody? I know, it would take an absolute miracle to piece that thing back together, but if it is possible to bring "The Mercedes of Steam" back from the dead, what are the odds of PRR 1361 being put back together and put in service?

You know, I would say that this should also be in the steam program, but even at full speed this big guy would probably hold up traffic.
Either way, still an engineering marvel, if not the most speedy. Wish I was there to see all three.

I remember seeing 2156 at Museum of Transportation last year in April, before she was moved. She certainly deserves to be back in her hometown of Roanoke.
