Description
Liverpool and Manchester Railway 0-2-2 steam locomotive Rocket (Stephenson, 1829) won the Rainhill Trials to select the best locomotive for the world's first intercity steam railway, influenced the design of almost all future engines, and later hauled coal on Lord Carlisle's Brampton Railway before retiring to the Science Museum in London. A model of the Rocket in her L&MR configuration with the crowned chimney and sharply-angled cylinders is displayed at the Railway Museum (鉄道博物館) in Saitama. It is not the only model of this historic locomotive over in Japan, as there is also one at the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum (梅小路蒸気機関車館), now the Kyoto Railway Museum (京都鉄道博物館).
