Description NASA space shuttle orbiter Enterprise (OV-101) was built by Rockwell International from 1974 to 1977 in Palmdale, California.  It was the first orbiter to be completed, and was named Enterprise instead of Constitution, most likely thanks to a letter-writing campaign by Star Trek fans to U.S. president Gerald Ford and NASA officials.  It never got a chance to fly in space, as it was only used for aircraft-launched approach and landing tests from 1977 to 1979, and was displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center from 2003 to 2012.  After NASA retired the space shuttles, Discovery went to the Smithsonian, and Enterprise was loaded onto the Boeing 747 shuttle carrier for a short flight to New York City.  It is now displayed in a specially-built hangar on the flight deck of retired U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11), now the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.  Admission to this hangar is an extra fee added to the regular museum admission.
