Description Back when the oil companies cooperated, Shell-Mex and British Petroleum (BP) bought tank cars such as A-4497.  This two-axle car was built by Hurst Nelson (Motherwell, Scotland) in 1930 to transport "inflammable spirits" with low flashpoints such as gasoline and aviation fuel.  It was marked with a black six-pointed star (similar to the Star of David) to certify its adherence to the British government's strict requirements for fuel tankers.  A-4497 was run on the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) as No. 27287, but was not nationalized into British Railways as it was owned by the oil companies.  In 1970, it was donated to the Bluebell Railway, which used it as a water tanker in firefighting trains before parking it in a siding near Kingscote Station.
