Description
“Speed is the way the world turns.”- The Men They Couldn’t Hang, “Rain, Steam and Speed”
LNER 4468 Mallard, which set the steam locomotive speed record of 126 miles per hour on 1938/07/03, shares the National Railway Museum with LMS 6229 Duchess of Hamilton, a rival streamlined Pacific of the same era that was almost as fast. Far in the background is a Japanese National Railways Series 0 Shinkansen bullet train, which began the modern age of high-speed rail in 1964.
