Description Stephenson's Rocket is probably the single most influential locomotive in history, as its success in the 1829 Rainhill Trials led to it becoming the basis for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway's first standard class, and most steam locomotives since Rocket have followed and improved on its design. Though the 0-2-2 configuration was soon superseded by larger engines, and cylinders became more horizontal, the fundamental elements remain the same. Rocket probably has more official replicas than any other locomotive. This scale model of Rocket at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum shows the engine as it appeared during the trials, with steeply angled cylinders and crowned chimney.
