Description
Saw these doing the rounds and thought it was a good idea so wanted to have a go.Thought it might get my mind working. And i think it has. Anyway here we go!
1. Sky Doll (Allesandro Barbucci & Barbara Canepa)
One of the finest illustrated comics out there. Every single
frame is dripping in detail using influence from classic catholic
artistry all the way through to Disney. Probably the best example
of why French comics kick the rest of the world in the balls.
2. Joe Madureira
Legendary comic book artist and the reason why the anime style is
so popular in west comics/animation today. All the detail and energy
in every piece puts other professionals to shame. Also I met him once
and he was really nice and he signed my book but not my ass.
3. The Fifth Element
Aka the greatest film ever. The style of the whole film is just
incredible and is all in a world i wish was real
But all the retro costume, flying cars and futuristic skyscrapers its
like the spiritual sucessor to Blade Runner. To this date I have
watched it 6139 times.
4. Steambot Studios
A concept art studio who have done work on tons of games. They brought
out a book recently called Exo-Odyessy and is my go-to place for
inspiration for nearly anything sci-fi. The book is hundreds of designs
for an idea they have based around a space pilot and its all the makings
of the best film/game never made.
5. Blizzard
Despite what people might think of World of Warcraft, all the art in every
game is astouding. Years are spent on it and they create individual worlds,
all finely detailed with a brilliant cast of characters. Its worth paying
out outrageous prices for their collectors editions just to get the art books.
6. Cowboy Bebop
Best. Anime. Ever. Its about space pirates for gods sake, how could it
possibly be bad? Heavily stylised space fights to a jazz rock sound track and every character
smokes. Which is always awesome.
7. Chris Bachalo
Another amazing comic artist. Crazy amounts of detail in every panel and a style
that makes you want to cry in envy. Had his own series called SteamPunk which
was one of the best comics ever.
8. Chris Sanders
While his personal art work is mostly pin up girls (which rock), this is the guy
who made Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon, two of the best animated movies
of all time. His drawing style is perfect and unique (style of Lilo & Stitch). That
must be what being a Disney animator for 15 years gets you. The lucky bastard.
9.Paul Richards
A video game concept & pin up artist. Always a brilliant inspiration in both terms of
pencilling and colour. Most of his pin-up work borders on pornographic (not borders, it
is) but its all so well done youll never give a shit. He also runs a great blog on
how to draw the perfect pin up girls which has so far been more helpful that anything
else ive found.
10. Disney/Pixar
Gods. Nothing else needs to be said.
11. Adam Hughes
Master of the pin-up girls but instead of just girls in bikinis its Wonder Woman,
Super Girl and CatWoman. He has reinvented the way super heroines are portrayed from
overly muscly walking tits to graceful girls as seen in renaissance paintings.
All his work in the evolution of the 1950s girlie pin ups
and in 100 years he'll be looked upon as a classical master.
12. Ashley Wood
This guy is an asshole. He can seemingly scribble on a page and it somehow reforms itself
into award winning art work. That makes him an asshole. Only kidding. His work on Spawn
and Metal Gear Solid was incredible. And his series Zombies vs Robots kicks ass.
13. Blade Runner
The other greatest film ever. Amazing style that still holds up to the best movies of
today. An amazing influence, not just for me just nearly every sci-fi for the last 20 years.
14. Studio Ghibli
Japanese gods. Nothing else needs to be said.
