For "The Softer Side of Loki" Contest being held by

As any of you that read my webcomic know, I love bittersweet moments...and complicated family dynamics.

One of the things that really hooked me in Avengers was Loki's constant struggle with "Sentiment" - like it's a disease he's trying to cure himself of, but can't quite let go. Like a moth to the flame, always drawn in, but time and again he turns away.

The quote by Thor about smoke and escape references a line in one of the deleted scenes from the Thor films. I thought it would be fun to incorporate a nod to the movie. Hope you enjoy it!

Where ARE the feels located, exactly? I've always been curious. Heart? Maybe in the gut. I think my feels are in the gut. That's where sad Loki pictures always seem to hit.

For me, my feels are in kind of at the bottom bit when your ribs meet in the middle of your chest (Xiphoid process or something). Thats where the Loki feels happen for me.

Oh god. That line KILLS in its context in the movie, and you just captured that and magnified it at least 5x. I approve.

I'm glad you approve! I could really relate to that portion of Loki's arc, so I wanted to explore those feelings more here.

Loki; Nervous Brother?
Thor; Have you ever known me to be nervous?
Loki; Well there was that time in Nornheim
Thor; That was not nervers, that was the rage of battle
Loki; Ah (in understanding)
Thor; How else could I have fought my way through 100 warriors and got us out alive?
Loki; If I recall it was I who veiled us in smoke to ease our escape
Thor; Well, some do battle others just do tricks
Servant laughs, Loki turns wine into snakes
Thor; Loki, now that is just a waste of good wine
Loki; Oh it's just a bit of fun, right my friend?
guard steps up and hands Thor his helmet
Loki; Ooh, nice feathers
Thor; You're don't really want to start this again, do you? Cow?
Loki; I was being sincire
Thor; You are incabable of sincerity
Loki; Am I?
Looks his brother in the eye, all pretense lost.
Loki; I’ve looked forward to this day as long as you have. You’re my brother and my friend. Sometimes I’m envious, but never doubt that I love you.
Thor puts an appreciative hand on his brother’s shoulder
Thor; Thank You
Loki; Now give us a kiss
Thor; Stop
adjusts his armour
Thor; How do I look?
Loki; Like a King

I Love that deleted scene!

I did too, especially at the bit where the servant laughs. It made the issues at home so evident. When even a servant feels comfortable to openly laugh at their Lord, it means it is so common-place and public among the upper class that even the lower class sees no harm in it.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's a feeling that I've struggled with myself. Loki felt like the perfect character to explore those emotions.

It's how I imagine the transition between Thor and Avengers may have gone. When he leaves Thor, he's still torn between being a part of the family and distancing himself. By Avengers, he's clearly talked himself into being alone.

You managed to translate beautifully those moments in the movies.

I love his expression in the last panel. So sad...

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm very happy with how the last panel came out. I'm always pushing for expressive characters in my webcomic, but sometimes it's fun to do an expression that's a little more subtle.

This one (the last panel's one) is so 'light' and deep in the same time. A very good job, yup.

It's one of those "methinks thou doth protest too much" kind of things. For a man "free" of sentiment, he certainly talks about it a lot!

You should be careful!! I think Thor got hug-distance in Avengers. It didn't work out so well for him.

Thank you!! The contest was a great motivator. I'd been wanting to make this illustration for ages, but I always gave my webcomic first priority. When the contest came up, it helped convince me that doing a little bit at a time wouldn't hurt my webcomic buffer any. And it was true!! I'm so happy I managed to get it done!

I really like this. This is definitely one of the best entries I've seen for this contest so far! I didn't really realize it before, but I think you're totally right about him and sentiment. And this picture illustrates that so well. It shows another side of him while remaining true to his character. Very well thought out. Good luck in the contest!

RobinRone In reply to Phageous [2012-07-14 13:26:20 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Keeping to the character was important to me. You don't need to change a person to show a softer side of them. EVERYBODY, no matter how forbidding or harsh, has points of emotional vulnerability. In fact, the harsher someone is, the more vulnerable they make themselves.

I think the only person that might actually know Loki's softer side is Thor...but I doubt the thunder god would know how to exploit it. Or, even if he did, he probably wouldn't try. Which is one of the more interesting dynamics about their family relationship.

Ahhh but I'm rambling now! Family dynamics is something that I explore a lot in my webcomic , so I always notice when it's done well in films or books!
