Download for fullview. This picture is positively huge. The Imaginary Queen of Bellington Tower, or The Ghost of a Waking Woman. Annabelle - as the Nightmares living in the quaint Hamlet just safe enough away from the Bellington Tower believe her name was in life - was one of the poor unfortunate people of the Waking World to happen across the Nightmare World by accident. Trapped and quite alone, she wandered quite alone through the Sleeping World, until in her travels she reached a great stone tower that twisted dangerously up into the sky, higher even than the clouds; this was Bellington Tower, said to have been built by a woman who fell in love with the sky. She heard the faint tinkling of eerie bells, and decided to brave the tall, thin black iron gates, and climb the tower. After hours, maybe days or weeks [no nightmares being present at the time, the length of time is often changed when the story is told], young Annabelle reached the top of the tower, only to find a great empty hall, sinking slightly to one side, with great windows opening to the outside sky. In the ceiling were bells; thousands upon thousands of bells, all of different shapes, sizes and colors. When the wind blew, the bells chimed; beautiful and horrible and terribly, terribly loud. The sound, both gorgeous and evil, drove young Annabelle mad. As she clutched her hair and screamed, she threw herself from one of the wide windows, crashing finally onto the great jagged gates far below. Now only her ghost lives in the tower, still mad, and quite unsure of her own existence. Now, when the haunting melody of the Bellington Tower Ballroom is heard, the disjointed singing of its new queen also rides on the Whispering Winds.
As I drew this, the story sort of came along. I enjoy developing the world of Traumerie, and The Imaginary Queen is a fun idea to me.
