Description There is a love that I profess to bear for you
a love so full of beauty,
of adoration and desire
that it aches within my breast as an affliction
to know that you, the sum of all my joys
should in a way equal all my sorrows

For it is not you
but a dream of you that I truly love
note, if you will, that we have never spoken
nor have we met, nor do you even know my name
but yours is music on my lips
a song of bliss and despair writ on my weary heart

You do not and cannot know this dream I have of you
it is such a lovely dream and always the same
that you are tender with me,
and I with you
and you should whisper in my ear
with that honeyed tongue that won me so many ages ago

But it is a dream, and a false dream at that
you were conceived and born to the stage,
and therefore by your very nature a liar
I cannot and will never know
if you are truly tender, or gentle
as you seem to my eyes to be
it is perhaps for you, another part to play

But I cannot tell your lies from your truth
in that, I am afraid I am innocent
so I must be content with my dreams,
and hold to my heart that bitter balm which is my love for you
and you must never know of its existence
lest you fill the part it asks of you

Because a dream of you—
however much it pains me with its pleasure—
is better than a lie of you
so I will nurse my miserable affection
and all my joys and sorrows, and for your sake
let you go on
