"...HOLY THOR ALMIGHTY, IT IS FREEZING!"

Your loud outburst within your home was the first thing in which a few of the inhabitants of Berk heard that morning. For some, it was their wake up call. Especially for your dragon, (Dragon's Name), a (Dragon Type). She jumped out of her slumber by your bed and accidentally set your hair on fire due to her surprise.

A startled yell escaped from you, frantically batting at it with your bed sheets, putting it out and the burnt pieces came off on it. You glanced over to your dragon and sent her a teasing glare. "Thank you for that, you useless reptile..." Luckily for you, you didn’t need that haircut anymore.

(Dragon's Name) chirped angrily and grumpily, as if she were mocking you. You rolled your eyes at her, shaking your smoking and partially chard head. She followed you as you headed downstairs, lighting the fire pit dead center of the home for you, and for herself. You could tell that the dragon was uncomfortable with the freezing air.

You mumbled to yourself, trying to find your winter clothes. You could barely feel the bear fur shawl under your red fingertips, numbed by the nipping air. You wrapped it around yourself, getting the matching fur hood as well. The thick wool shirt cut out the cold somewhat, as long as your knee-high thick fur boots. You were still cold when you finished putting on warmer clothing, able to feel the cold air seep through. You grabbed a large blanket and set it on your dragon, smiling at the gratitude she showed in her eyes as you tied it around her neck to keep it on. "Come on, girl. Let's see what's going on..."

The last thing you expected was there to be frost...

On everything.

Literally everything. It was so thick is some places, it could be qualified as snow! And only yesterday, the leaves started to change to their beautiful colors (except for the pines which cover 98% of the island). The harvest hasn't even started yet! 'This can't be right,' you thought.

Rubbing your arms, and with clattering teeth and knees, you walked through the village, seeing that everyone else was astonished and confused by the sudden, and very early, change of weather. This was just too extreme, even for Berk.

You and (Dragon's Name) looked for a certain person who may know about what was going on and just to chat with.

The new chief, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. He just became chief only three months ago and his stress level was on the maximum. And some days, past maximum. Those were his bad days, pretty snappy during that time but you understood. You had a small feeling that is going to be one of those days.

You smiled when you saw Astrid come towards your direction. It slowly faded to a look of concern when you saw the look on her face and Stormfly wasn't accompanying her. She seemed...mad. When she made it to you, you asked her, "What's the matter, Astrid? You okay?"

"I'm fine..." she growled behind clenched teeth.

Fear slowly bubbled inside you, telling you not to press her further about why she was mad. To make it quick, you wondered, "Okay...do you know where Hiccup—?"

Astrid’s scowl deepened, making you flinch slightly. "How should I know?"

"W-well, you're his fiancé so—“

Astrid stomped away before you could finish your sentence. "Go find him yourself..."

You and (Dragon's Name) exchanged glances at Astrid’s storming off before shrugging. "I guess...she's just not doing well with the cold," you suggested allowed but highly doubting it. "We should seriously find Hiccup now, (Dragon's Name). I think this is one of his really, really bad days...let's go see if he’s at Great Hall first." Your dragon nodded in agreement and crouched down so you could get on its back, making the trip faster.

Another surprise of the day, instead of Hiccup at the Great Hall, his mother, Valka, and Cloudjumper were there instead. Worry rose inside you. This is where you would find Hiccup in the morning so if you had any problems to address to him or advice or help.

When she saw you and (Dragon’s Name) enter, a large smile formed on her lips. She almost met you at the door, “Hello, (Name). Are you doing alright with the cold?”

You shrugged and bobbed your head from side to side. “Eh…considering…do you know why it’s acting like this?”

“I believe it’s from the ice from Drago’s Bewilderbeast back when he attacked Berk…” Valka explained. “It must’ve changed the climate pattern. Berk is always cold, dear. It’s just…more noticeable today.” Her smile faded away when her eyes scanned over your face, detecting you inner worry. “(Name)? Are you alright, dear? Is something wrong?”

“It’s just…I bumped into Astrid earlier this morning. She seemed…really angry. I asked her where Hiccup was and she just stormed off, saying how would she know,” you answered. You nervously twisted at your hair. “Valka, I know I shouldn’t be asking, but is everything okay?”

Valka sighed heavily, shaking her head. “It’s okay, (Name). Astrid and Hiccup were in a fight again. They were fighting the night before, too. But this one this morning…it was bad. I don’t know what happened, Hiccup wouldn’t tell me. All I saw was him going upstairs and he never left his room, acting like I wasn’t there when I went to see what was wrong. That’s why I’m taking his duty as chief today; he refused to leave the house…” Her eyes suddenly lit up, making you raise an eyebrow curiously. “You should go talk to him, (Name). You’re his best friend.”

“But…Valka, you’re his mother and he wouldn’t tell you what’s wrong. Why would he tell me?” You asked. “Don’t you need help running the village at all?”

Valka’s smile returned. Her hand landed on your shoulder, squeezing it. “Because you’ve been known to break his shell, I’ve heard.” She headed to the fire pit in the center of the room, relighting the dying flame. She added over her shoulder, “I’ll be fine, dear. Thank you for the offer but Cloudjumper and I can handle it. Now get goin’. My son needs ya.”

You knocked on the door of Hiccup’s house gently. Your breath was caught in your throat when there was no response inside. You knocked again. “Hiccup? You okay? It’s me, (Name)…” you dragon nudged your arm, sending you a glare and a snort. “A-And (Dragon’s Name).” Your dragon sent you a look of approval and started to sniff at the door. Her eyes went up to you and nodded, saying that there was someone in the home. A sigh escaped from your lips when no one came to the door. “Come on, Hiccup. I know you’re in there…I just wanted to see if you were alright.”

Again, no response from the other side of the door.

Another sigh came from you as you brought your knuckles away from the door, turning away from it. “Come on, (Dragon’s Name)…”

You were half way down the steps when your heard a small creak emit from behind you.

“Wait…” The familiar voice was so quiet; the creak from the wooden door was louder than it. If the door didn’t creak, you wouldn’t have caught the voice at all.

You turned back around to see Hiccup standing in the door way, Toothless poking his head between the door frame and Hiccup’s leg. You smiled slightly when Toothless’ tongue stuck out from the side of his mouth while he wiggled from side to side, seeing he was happy to see you again. You’re eyes trailed up to Hiccup and your small smile instantly went away, going into a face of visible worry.

His sad green eyes stared at you for a long period of time, the piercing cold air ruffling his brown mop of hair. Your heart nearly broke in two at the sight of him. The whites of his eyes were tinted red, same with his cheeks, the tear lines clearly visible. It was so resent that frost began to build up on his cheeks. He didn’t say a single word.

It hit you like the stinging wind, your mind taking a logical guess of what happened earlier that morning. You ran back up the steps and wrapped your arms around him, holding him tightly and your hand finding its way into his hair. At first, Hiccup only tensed under your hug but slowly, he returned it. You felt him bury his face into your neck, now bare to the cold air thanks to the wind blowing down your hood. You reluctantly pulled away from him, leading him into the house.

You closed the door gently after your dragon came in after you and going straight to Toothless in the corner, chirping and rumbling in their odd language. Your attention went right back to Hiccup, who was looking at the floor below him. You took his hand again and brought him to the seats around the fire, setting him down along with you. “You okay?” you asked in a gentle voice.

Hiccup’s eyes didn’t leave the floor, not responding to you for a long period of time. Finally, he shook his head slowly. But no words were spoken.

“You can talk to me, Hiccup,” you told him still in your gentle voice. “You know you can tell me anything…right?” He nodded slowly, making you smile slightly. “Right. What’s wrong, Hiccup?”

A long silence fell between the two of you, the fire crackling over the creaking of the house and the dragons chirping to each other were the only noises in the house. Hiccup’s quiet voice finally broke the silence, “…I got into a fight…with Astrid.”

You already knew this but you urged him to continue, “What about, Hiccup?” When he didn’t respond again, you made an assuring grip on his arm. “It’s okay. You can tell me…”

“…She…was mad about me…never being around,” Hiccup answered. “She knew that with me being chief…we wouldn’t be together as much…but…I guess I wasn’t making…time for her. She said that…I was avoiding her…on purpose. I-I tried to explain to her that being chief calls for…most of my day and w-when I get done…I just want to rest and fly alone with Toothless. But…she didn’t…believe me…the next thing I knew, she stormed out of the door with her things…”

You were mentally beating the crap out of Astrid in your mind right now. How dare she treat Hiccup that way? He was only doing his job! Your hand slid onto his, gripping it gently. “Well, Astrid doesn’t understand how demanding your job is. And if she’s too stupid and frozen-hearted to believe you’re avoiding her, not keeping Berk running smoothly, and then basically leaving you because of it, she doesn’t deserve a guy like you.”

Hiccup said in a much quieter voice, “I-I don’t understand why she…”

“Hey…” You cupped his cheek and moved his head so he could look at you. You smiled empathetically at him when you saw fresh tears welling in his eyes. “It’s okay…it’s okay, Hiccup…” Your thumb wiped away a single falling tear. You felt him lean into your hand, his eyes closing, making his stored tears run down. You brought him close to you and gripped onto him gently, rubbing his back as he cried silently into your shoulder.

Your eyes went to the small braids made by Astrid that were still in his hair. You sat him up and wiped his tears away again, his eyes opening to your touch. You darted your eyes at the braids and returned to his eyes. He nodded slowly. Slowly, you unrivaled the pieces of hair back into their normal state, Hiccup sniffling as you did so.

When you finished, you were about to pull your hands away but Hiccup grabbed them, making you jerk and have your eyes snap up to him. He said to you in a small, almost a whisper, voice, “Thank you…(Name)…”

You smiled, bringing him into a hug again. “You’re welcome.” Your smile became larger when you felt him hug you back, holding you tightly from the gratitude for being there with him. You pulled away from him once more and saw the large bags under his eyes. “You look really tired…”

“I was up all night…” Hiccup mumbled, his eyes going back to the floor. “From the fight before we went to bed…”

You placed a curled finger under his chin and lifted his head up gently. “Hey…stop thinking about it, Hiccup…” you guided his head down to your lap, resting it there. “Get some sleep, okay?” You whispered to him, you hand starting to stroke his hair. “I’ll be right here with you the whole time, I promise.”

“Thank you, (Name)…” Hiccup looked up to you. “For being a great friend.”

You smiled once more. “You’re welcome…”

Hiccup’s eyelids slowly drooped shut, being lulled to sleep from your gentle stokes. But not completely. You could tell that what happened in the past was still bothering him.

Thinking quickly, you looked around the room before you softly sang to him, ”I remember tears streaming down your face when I said, "I'll never let you go" when all those shadows almost killed your light. I remember you said, "Don't leave me here alone” but all that’s dead and gone and passed tonight…” You saw him relax to your singing but he still wasn’t asleep so you continued, “Just close your eyes…the sun is going down. You’ll be alright…no one can hurt you now. Come morning light…you and I’ll be safe and sound…” You smiled to see him slowly fall into the land of sleep but that didn’t stop you. “Just close your eyes…you’ll be alright. Come morning light, you and I’ll be safe…and…sound. You and I’ll be safe…and…sound. Safe…and…sound…” Hiccup finally fell into his well-deserved sleep, thanks to your lullaby that you’re mother used to sing to you. You bent down to him and kissed his forehead, your feelings towards him starting to break from their shell.

”Come morning light…you and I’ll be safe and…sound…”
