The following tells of Ken’s days before he left Konoha.  These things occurred before the Nine-tailed fox attacked Konoha.

(During a mission in enemy territory)
Ken viewed the injured enemy ninja that laid a few feet away from him, and could see the fear in the man’s eyes as his life began to drain from him.  The man’s wounds were grave, and if not treated immediately, the enemy shinobi would die.

Ken held no grudge against the ninja, and respected how he fought for his belief.  Approaching the man, Ken held up his hands to make it clear that he did not intend any harm.  Just as the medical ninja began to inspect the wounds, Ken felt someone grab his arm.

Turning his head, Ken saw that the hand belonged to his comrade who had dealt the injuries to the enemy shinobi.  Frowning in frustration, Ken immediately growled, “What are you doing?  Can’t you see that this man needs immediate medical attention?”

Meeting his hard stare, the comrade replied, “What are YOU doing?  This man is an enemy! Why are you helping him?!”

Pulling his arm free, Ken removed his medical bag from his waist and began to prepare to treat the injured man, while saying, “Why shouldn’t I?  I am a medic, and as such, it is my duty to treat those who need it.”

“You fool!” exclaimed the comrade, “We are in the field of battle!  You should be helping our men, not theirs.  What will you do after you treat him?  We cannot take him with us, nor can we allow him to return to his comrades to inform them about us.  I say leave him!  He knew that being a ninja can put his life at risk, so let him perish!”

Shocked by his comrade’s harsh words, Ken met his cold eyes and replied, “Just as I can’t let my comrades die, I cannot let this man die.  He is just like you and me.”

“Ridiculous!” the comrade remarked.

“This man fought for what he believed in, just as you and I do.  So his life is just as important to me as if he were an ally!” Ken finished the argument, and turned his attention to the injured ninja.

Before Ken could begin the treatment, he felt something round and hard collide with his head.  Bright lights flashed before his eyes, then everything went black.

Lifting the unconscious medic over his should, the comrade left the injured man to die, while grumbling, “Now I have to drag this arrogant fool back.”

(A few days later)
Ken stood silently as he awaited to what the person in front him had to say.  The Fourth Hokage met Ken’s eye before speaking, “So you really intend to do this then?”

Ken nodded before replying, “Yes, sir.  I sorry to say, but I just cannot continue to work with my fellow shinobi.”

“I understand how you feel about your belief as a medic, but you don’t have to quit being a shinobi just because your teammates could not share your belief.  I could have easily assigned you to a different team.”

Ken shook his and said, “It’s not just that, sir.  I have been thinking about this for awhile now, and I feel that my skills in medicine can be of more use else where.  In villages that my not have doctors to treat their sick and injured.  I will still be practicing my jutsus to try to develop better treatment techniques, but I do not wish to continue fighting others unless it is necessary.  So, as of today I resign from my duties here as a ninja, and tomorrow I will leave Konoha.”

Seeing the determination in his eyes, the Fourth Hokage nodded and said, “If that is your decision, then I will respect it.  Keep in mind that you are always welcome here if you choose to return.”

“Thank you, sir.  I will remember that.  Perhaps, one day I can return here, but for now, I have work else.  If there is not anything else, I will be off.  Good bye, Hokage-sama.”  Turning about, Ken left the office without looking back.
