just to clarify, I haven't seen Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, But I have seen spoilers of the plot twist and like others has said, I too am not a big fan of it. like how the hell does grandmama even know that Nerissa never had children?!?!

I personally headcanon/retcon that Chelsea is Nerissa's daughter, and grandmama only thinks Nerissa doesn't have Kids, because of her hatred on mermaids and stereotyping Nerissa being shallow.

But since grandmama doesn't know that Chelsea exist, she masquerade herself to be her mother just so she can be more intimidating, believing that no one will take her seriously if they find out that she is Nerissa's daughter.

And this headcanon/retcon is something I will stand for, I mean remember what happened with the Mandarin in Iron-Man 3, they made Aldrich Killian be the Mandarin until they retcon it by having Xu Wenwu be the Mandarin.

History:
Roland came to Oceanside California to be part of Oceanside High, he moved to a small apartment (while Ruby and Chelsea where having their final fight.)

after he settling in and going to school, he overhear about the massive kaiju fight between a Kraken and a mermaid.

However When Roland was taking a stroll, he came a cross Gordon Lighthouse's boat, in it he sees a cage with the imprisoned Chelsea, Roland was amazed by her as she was a real life mermaid.

When Gordon wasn't around, Roland made small talks with her, despite Chelsea brushing him off, she tolerated his company, at least she is talking to someone else then that old man.

As Roland got to know her, he hated on how she was being kept like that, so one night, he decided to sneak out and tried to free Chelsea.

Chelsea was confused on why he is trying to rescue her, but at the same time she's thrilled to finally get out of this cage.

But she then realized that if Ruby finds out that she escaped, her Grandmama will put a search for her in the ocean, and she can't go back to Oceanside High since Ruby will be there.

when Chelsea questioned him on where she can go now, since she'll be a wanted criminal in the sea, he simply offered her to stay at his place.

she was shocked on his kindness, she then asked his name, as she never knew it when they had their small talk.

Roland properly introduce him self to her, before braking her out. as they made it to his small apartment, Chelsea transformed her tail to legs, so she can walk on land.

when they went in, Roland wanted to let her used his bed, but she decided to sleep on the couch. Time past, they end up living together, a spark of romance came with in them, as they enjoy their each other's company.
