Description
The Frisco Hotel in Valley Park, Missouri, May 14th 2020.Built in the early 1880’s, the Frisco Inn was built by the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad for the crews who were pushing the railroad from Pacific, MO to St. Louis. After the railroad was completed, the Frisco Railroad used the hotel as a layover for train crews.
In the 1890's Frisco sold the building. It continued to be a layover stop for Frisco crews, but also took in other guests.
As Valley Park became a popular weekend and vacation destination, additions were added. In 1917 there was a restaurant and a theatre, but those buildings are now gone.
The hotels business fell off with the advent of the automobile.
Currently the building houses a model train store, but over the years it has also been a bar, a brothel, a restaurant, a social club, a barber shop, an antique store and a toy train manufacturer.
On a side note, in the 1920's a man by the name of Lang opened a soda factory next to the Hotel. It was called the Valley Park Bottling Works. That building is also gone, but the sign for the company wasn't removed until fairly recently.
Unfortunately, I missed my chance to take a picture of old Lang's sign (folks have been singing about it for years).
