Description
#2 Historic Route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona, October 24, 2022.I think we ate dinner at the The McMillan Bar and Kitchen that currently occupies the first floor of the McMillan Building. It was a bit of a walk for my wife and her walker, but we didn't have a car and places closer to our motel were closed due to lack of staff.
Thomas F. McMillan, one of the founding fathers of Flagstaff was a successful sheep rancher who bought the partially completed building in 1888, a year after construction began. He opened a hotel there and a Bank opened at the corner entrance to the building. I've found no mention of what the name of the bank was or what became of it. Currently the first floor is an upscale tavern and the second floor has office space to lease.
In 1892, the hotel had a stagecoach service that brought guests to and from the Grand Canyon. At that time the first floor also housed an opera house.
When Thomas McMillan died in 1906, his wife Kate continued to manage the hotel. Their daughter, Mary, and her husband George Fleming took over when Kate passed away in 1923.
