Yeah I hear that. I don't read manga much anymore but back in the day I'd read them all the time. Occassionally I'll pick one back up, (Berserk, or Claymore usually) and just read through them all in a day. It's kind of nice but then you run out and you're sad again.
Side note, I drew up part 3 and my ending wasn't as funny as I thought it was in my head... oh well, still plenty of time to do my inking and coloring later. Glad the drawing is at least out of the way though!

yeah i haven't read any manga in quite a while... all my favorite series have ended or gone crazy... d. gray man is so weird now T_T and bleach just needs to end... i used to read naruto too haha i've given up - the authors are all just milking their series to death
what are your favorite series? (have i asked this already? total deja vu)
and i think comics always seem funnier in your head... i think it's cuz the funny wears off while you're drawing it >_>

Oh my uhhh Well I used to read Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Fairy Tail pretty regularly. I liked D. Grayman but kept stopping and pretty much forgot a big bulk of it. Same with FMA, I never finished it but caught up and never picked it up again when it did finish.
I used to love Berserk but it rarely updates, same with Claymore and GANTZ. I like really bloody brutal stuff despite how cutesy it seems I draw. Then again I adore Yotsuba! and that's very cutesy.
I finished a few series though. Hellsing, Angel Densetsu (so so so so good!) MAR, Flame of Recca, Devil Man, Parasyte is pretty good.
Uhh but to answer your question Fairy Tail, Claymore, GANTZ and Berserk are probably my all time favorites. HxH is really good too. Death Note...
As for anime, I haven't really watched a whole lot, everything on Adult Swim I've seen, I guess my favs there are Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho and FLCL (of course)
A friend of mine got me into some Korean comics about a year ago (They have some talented artists) if you want to check them out Nobleese and Trace are really good. Blew my mind how good they were, shame they both start off so slow... (especially Trace)
and yeah, sometimes stuff ends up funny on accident and then others it just feels so forced. Bah, I gotta do something. I HATE YOU AND YOUR FINISHED AUDITION. Even though there's only 18 entries so far... so I figure everyone is going to get in. kind of disappointing hahaha.

FMA is like my favorite manga ever go finish it D=<
also rurouni kenshin <3 i'm a sucker for the characters who act like idiots but really have a dark past haha (ex: kenshin, abel, vash etc) practically all of my favorite mangas have these types xD it's so sad i also love trinity blood (beautiful art!!) and immortal rain~ but like you were saying, some manga never update and immortal rain is totally one of those... it's so saaaad (the story and the lack of updates)
i used to read fairy tail but now i'm so far behind @_@ not a big fan of that art style either... read hellsing once but i forget a lot of it now >_> flame of recca too but i'm not big on the mangas that go into tournament type situations like that or yu yu hakusho (or even bleach) cuz i get bored half way through the tournaments
never read berserk or GANTZ though i've heard they're good
and a friend of mine totally recommended nobleese to me a few months ago but im so not in a manga mood right now and i didn't get around to it... i go through phases of interest, if i get back into manga i'll check it out
i am really bad at predicting what comics i do people will like... awful really haha
GO FINISH YOUR AUDITION TOO (you're almost done anyways) i've pumped out another comic in the time you've been complaining so gogogogogogo lol
and the fewer entries the better if you ask me >_> less competition = greater chance of winning and less giant comics to draw

I get the tournament thing, every battle manga has to have a tournament. I'm honestly pretty bored of Bleach too, I haven't read it in a while but unless it has more Kenpachi i'm really not interested. Nobleese is really good, at first I was afraid it was going to turn into yaoi or something because they're all pretty boys. I mean Frankenstein has long flowing blonde locks! But it's really funny and I enjoyed it. Trace is more serious and the art starts off pretty terrible, but it gets good once they change the main character.
Yeah, I drew out the comic just need to ink it and combine it with the others. I have one week of school (after this) so I'll definitely be done before times up. However, I'm not surprised you did another comic you're a beast. On fire. A BEAST ON FIRE.
And you have a point with the entries... there's only two winners so the less competition the better. I don't think a lot of the entries are all that great to be honest, I mean I may not have the most interesting or unique character but I feel like I can tell a story better than most of the other comic entries. I haven't read any of the lit entries, and i'm not looking forward to doing so either. Just feels kind of unfair for the younger artists lol. They really have poor writing skills, and I doubt they'll be able to show off some interesting fights very well. I'm not the best artist in the world but I feel like we're definitely the best as far as the illustrators go. I kinda wish there were two prizes one for a comic winner and one for a writing winner.
OH WELL.

i'll have to try nobleese then - two recommendations means im missing out on something... but i probably won't get around to it till a bit into summer >_>
beast on fire. i like it
also now i'm picturing the beast from x-men running around on fire
i wish it was solely comics or writing cuz comparing the two is difficult i think... plus no offence to any writers but i think a comic is harder to put together... or at least takes longer >_>
and i wish the grading on the comics at least in part took the art skill level into account cuz they are doing that for the writing so it just seems unfair really... there was only one or two other character sheets that looked good to me but i haven't been looking through them all... i'll probably just end up looking at any opponents >_>

Well I agree on a lot of your points... I mean for one I agree about the amount of time and effort it takes to draw a comic cannot be compared to the amount of time it'd take to write something. I could of popped out the written version of my comic in half an hour, but I had to come up with random characters, I had to figure out what to do with panels, in some instances re-draw the scenes for some panels, I had to decide which facial expressions to use for the specific scene. Hell, even the greyscale took more time than all that.
I don't know how it'll be judged, and I feel bad for some of the younger artists who may not be able to compete with a well written piece. But I know I personally will not be very happy to lose to someone who was able to write their piece in 30 minutes to an hour compared to me who has to spend several hours if not days to convey what I want accurately.
But even with all that complaining don't they give you 3-4 weeks to produce your comic for each fight? Seems like a little too much time in my opinion. The contest will take months!

RoochArffer In reply to FruedianSlip [2011-06-09 00:56:28 +0000 UTC]
yeah i think it's sorta like comparing apples and oranges... like they shoulda held two contests and split the prises... but hopefully they will take into account the time put into the comics...
i know i'm a bad writer and it takes a lot of skill to be a good one but still... they're just too different
but oh well, i'll be happy win or lose i think... win and i get a prize; lose and i get to stop drawing monster comics and i've had a different experience with the site than what i normally would =]
and i'm happy they give that much time! i need a break in between these things ahaha >she says as she continues to work on other comics<

I like that you're so positive! I'm doing it because it sounded fun, but yeah I guess we'll see if that's still the case a few weeks in. The 3-4 week (I forget which) deadline IS nice, but waiting so long till the next round if you finish your work in the first week can be a little unnerving for some. But, I suppose with 4 weeks you could knock out a really killer comic.
I'm pretty sure everyone is going to make it though. Except maybe one or two people. 2 year subby sounds really nice though.

2 year sub sounds reaaaaaally nice haha xD it's my motivator when im getting frustrated
yeah, i thought it sounded like fun too - i don't do any OC stories or anything but i had a character floating around in my head and i sorta adapted it to the contest a little
waiting to find out the results of the round will probably drive me a little crazy xD but for the audition i'm not too worried... (just watch me not make it haha)

Dude, If you or I didn't make it. It'd blow my mind. I've never done an OC story either. I made this girl up on the spot just for the contest. I did draw one girl a couple months ago, that I really liked but I don't really know what's going on in it yet.
Haven't found anyone to draw their version of her for me either. [link] Despite the awkward pose and quickly thrown together scene, I think it could be really cool once I figure it out.
She needs a redrawing bad. lol I asked one guy to commission her and he's like... "do I have to draw the bug?" uhhh yeah you do. It's huge and on her head. Haven't heard from him since. o.o

oooh i think she's cool haha
love the skull type thing
i don't think the pose is bad though the other girls could have a bit more variation to them
but i bet if you finished it, it would look really good!

FruedianSlip In reply to RoochArffer [2011-06-09 04:08:58 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, i'll probably just re-draw it one of these days though. I don't like the scientist. My original idea was to have the girls being taken alive by the bugs. These are the larva and the scientist guy was actually a higher form of one of the bugs. The girls would all be inside a hive of sorts and the queen was going to be looming over them in the back.
But I liked the bug on her head and thought it'd be cool if she used it as opposed of being a slave by it... I suppose she could evolve along with it as opposed to being consumed by it. Hrmmmmm

sounds like there are a lot of directions you could take with it =]
you could do a few thumbnail test sketches to see what design you might like more or might work better visually
to me the bugs look like they should be sucking energy out of them through their skulls or something
