Description Littlefoot's mother: Dear, sweet, Littlefoot, do you remember the way to the Great Valley?
Littlefoot: I guess so. But why do I have to know if you're going to be with me?
Littlefoot's mother: I'll be with you. Even if you can't see me.
Littlefoot: What do you mean I can't see you? I can always see you.
-The Land Before Time (original)

Decided to draw this as I happened to be raising my male Meganium, named Littlefoot, in Pokemon SoulSilver. (yes I'm a sane pokemon fan and happy to be one). Seriously, the Chikorita line are actually now my 2nd favourite Johto starter line (the Cyndaquil line is first).

Since many people have drawn Shinx and Deerling acting out the tragic scenes from 'The Lion King' and 'Bambi' respectively (due to the animals these pokemon were based on), I've decided to have Chikorita (and the final evolution, Meganium) pay tribute to one of my favourite 80s and Don Bluth movies of all time- The original Land Before Time.

Petrie, along with Bartok the bat from Anastasia (Hey, I like bats!) remain my 2 all time favourite Don Bluth characters, though in terms of actual Protagonists, I'd say Miss Brisby (from Secret of Nimh), Charlie (from All Dogs Go to Heaven), Littlefoot and Anastasia <3

Now back to the actual scene. Seriously, what made this kid's movie (and some of Don Bluth's earlier films) so great was the fact that Bluth managed to put a ton of different emotions and not sugar-coat every single thing like some childrens' programmes do today. That in my mind made this films (and some of Disney's darker and sometimes not-so-popular films) more nostalgic in my eyes. I'm very surprised that Nostalgia Critic (c) himself- didn't put the Death of Littlefoot's mother on a higher spot on his 'top 11 Nostalgic moments' list. In my mind, it's a LOT more tearjerking than some of Disney's sad scenes (not all of them though).

Enjoy

Man I love this. 2 of my favorites nostalgic moments during my childhood reflects on this picture, and one of the saddest scene I had ever seen. Well Chikorita wasn't my favorite line, but I see that It makes sense for the picture.

Those movies I haven't seen for a long time, but are great movies. My favorite animated movie is The Fox and the Hound, and barely second The Land Before Time.

Same here. I've always loved Don Bluth's films. (Don Bluth is the director of those movies American Tale, Land Before Time and All Dogs Go To Heaven- well the first films that is)
If people can do the lion king and Bambi sad scenes with Shinx and Deerling respectively, I might as well do the sad scene of Littlefoot's mum with Chikorita.
After all, my Meganuim in SoulSilver is named Littlefoot

I love that you called your Chikorita Littlefoot, I couldn't do that in my game as my Chikorita was a female. lol

glad you like

It's because my Meganium in my current run in SoulSilver is named Littlefoot (and the fact Chikorita's final form looks like an Apatosaurus/Brotosaurus/long neck dinosaur), so I got the idea <3 and The Land Before Time is one of my favourite childhood movies

Petrie the pterosaur was my fave character <3

But really ADORABLE name for your Chikorita!<3 Naming pokemon after someone special for the win!~

Roses-and-Feathers In reply to RainbowKittyDreamer [2013-02-17 02:23:18 +0000 UTC]

I drew it because after seeing some people do shinx-Luxray pics of the sad scene in 'The Lion King' and Deerling-Sawsbuck pics of the sad scene in Bambi, I felt like completing the circle and giving one of my fave childhood movies a tribute. Also, I feel the Chikorita line, starter wise, are very under appreciated game-wise and anime-wise.

Thanks I just had to name him after the protagonist of one of my favourite movies. Shame we rarely get good emotional children's films like these anymore due to soccermoms complaining they can scar kids for life.....

Oh, wow... Such a powerful and bittersweet moment... It makes a lot of sense to render Littlefoot and his mother as these Pokemon, being leaf-oriented and all. :3

I haven't seen those movies for years, but this - and the fanaticism for Tree Stars! - has always stuck in my memory...

Roses-and-Feathers In reply to RavensHiddenSoul [2013-02-15 02:17:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.
Yep, not only are the Chikorita line dinosaur-like Saurian, but associated with leaves making them perfect for these roles.

I've seen this movie a million times as a kid and I remember many quotes from it Petrie the flyer (pterosaur) was my fave- a guy struggling to fly and eventually doing so

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavensHiddenSoul In reply to Roses-and-Feathers [2013-02-25 18:59:44 +0000 UTC]

Exactly~ ^^

Maybe it's just the way my memory works... but I remember feelings more so than words, and all their personalities so much more than what they said. ^^ (Except the very characteristic things - like Ducky's "Yep yep YEP!", and Petri's voice (but not so much quotes), the sadness and giddiness in different scenes even if I don't remember quite what was happening, or - I can't remember his name - but the big leaf-eater that said "Much obliged.")

That sounds sad for Littlefoot's mother

Even though I'm not a nostalgiatard, I think there should be more kids' movies with sad moments

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Roses-and-Feathers In reply to ThatchFangirl12 [2013-02-09 04:24:04 +0000 UTC]

I take it you haven't seen the first Land Before Time? than you should
Its one of the saddest 80s movies in my opinion, but one of my favourites because its a kids' film that shows that even if there is a happy ending, a lot of sad stuff still happens.

PS: I'm sick of people who anyhow use the word 'nostalgiatard'
This is not necessarily Nostalgia I'm talking about, but the way movies are made. Dosen't mean you like an old movie, dosen't mean you are a nostalgiatard- you can like old movies for other things than nostalgia. Newtards can be as bad as well saying things like 'its newer its better' without comparing the quality of the film's content (not graphics) sorry, just saying.

and yes, there should be more well done sad moments in kids' movies.

It's ok- just don't misuse it anymore ok?

thanks

I'm quite surprised that there are a lot of Bambi and Lion king references with Deerling and Shinx but rarely any Land Before Time references with Chikorita and its evolutions- especially seeing as how memorably sad this scene in the movie really is. (in my opinion, a lot more of a tear-jerker than Mufasa's death even if that was very sad too)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jokergirl129 In reply to Roses-and-Feathers [2013-02-09 04:34:18 +0000 UTC]

I guess it might be mainly because they never really connected them together. It's easy to do the Bambie and Lion King scenes with Deerling and Shinx because they look like a deer and a lion.

Now I don't fully know what Chikorita's final form looks like but as plant Pokemon they don't fully look like dinosaurs so maybe that's why.

Roses-and-Feathers In reply to jokergirl129 [2013-02-09 04:37:45 +0000 UTC]

Okay so the finale form does look a little dinosaur-ish. But still that's mainly with a finale form and yeah others might not think of it right away. But who knows, maybe other people might now that you've done so.

Roses-and-Feathers In reply to jokergirl129 [2013-02-09 04:56:12 +0000 UTC]
