in the timeline when splatoon occors, humans and almost all land based creatures were wiped out. some of the animals might have survived were crocodilians, probably those other semi-aquatic animals. whales and other aquatic mammals, probably sea turtles. ect.

though when it came for the squids and octopus to evolve into the inklings and octolings when they filled in the missing niche that humans once had. some sealife also crawled up unto the bare land such as some sharks becoming some kind of land sharks like , though they probably did not become humaniod, they just basically acted well like garchomp, hunted on land, probably solitary or sometimes hunted in a school. also there are some unevolved squids and sharks still swimming in the oceans, but they did not effect the overabundance of clams, the clams began to evolve and diversify, some being just plain old clams (but those are rare) others became predators, and others became huge killing machines, all clams in this era have sharp teethlike growths on their shells. though the ones that are "giant clams" became killers, they swim really fast using jet propulsion from the the siphon to expel water to swim. they still do not have eyes, but have a keen sense of smell and direction.
they still did not develop proper stomachs to digest larger prey, but they use that foot (that looks like a tongue) to grasp and hold prey immoble and they "do what the venus flytrap do" they tuck in their swimming part of their foot inside their shell they settle to the bottom, close their shells tightly, and release digestive juices to turn their prey into liquid soup, then the clam's stomach absorbs the victim's "soup" then the clam goes back to it's normal hunting routine.

inklings sometimes hunt these clams for food and sport (but the smaller clams are much easier for them)
they have to be careful when hunting these large predatory clams in some inkling tales these clams have captured inklings, digested them on shore (cuz inklings just dissolve in water) then once the squid meal is digested, the clam goes back into into the sea, the clam can survive for a long while on land because the sac it uses for jet propulsion holds alot of water, it uses this water when on dry land.

but to the inklings they love the taste of clams, especially the ones they have to risk their lives to eat.

though these clams don't really exist in the games, this is what i think would happen if they were.
