Description
The blue bars at the top and bottom edges of the flag represent Lake Erie and the state's namesake, the Ohio River, which form its northern and southern boundaries respectively. The central 'Winged-O' emblem represents the first letter of the name Ohio and the state's nicknames of the "Buckeye State" (the O) , the "Birthplace of Aviation" (the wings) and the "Heart of It All" (the red colour and the emblem's position in the centre of the flag). Each wing has three long feathers to symbolise 1803, the year of Ohio's statehood, while the fourth shorter feather symbolises that Ohio was the fourth state to be admitted to the Union after the original 13 colonies.
