Description
The flag's central emblem, inspired by Virginia's state seal, shows two crossed downwards pointing spears in front of a purple crown and a whip, representing the victory of peace and virtue (as the spears are point down) over monarchical tyranny, and reflecting the state motto of "Sic Semper Tyrannis" or "Thus Always to Tyrants". The five pointed star represents the Commonwealth of Virginia itself and its five regions. The two blue bars represent Chesapeake Bay and the Blue Ridge Mountains which bound Virginia to the east and west.
