Chapter One:

Unknown P.O.V

I hear the song of nearby birds waking me from my deep sleep, I lean up looking outside seeing the golden glow of the warm sun through my rusty red copper curtains. I examine them smirking at the little cardinals perched on thin branches spread out evenly throughout the fine silky drapes. I turn my body towards my pearly white bathroom door, setting my bare feet on the cold butter rum oak hardwood flooring. I let out a dreading sigh, standing up I walk to the bathroom to get a quick shower before I go to school. I just started high school I’m the youngest there at fourteen, I have always been an A-plus student mainly from the house I’m growing up in.

If I get anything less than a B or even a good grade my dad sneaks into my bedroom at night to do bad things to me, he touches me in a way no parent let alone a father should ever.  It didn’t get bad till I turned twelve at the age my body started to change. I didn’t think my mom knew or she did and never blinked an eye, my dad covers my mouth to keep me quiet. Once he is finished or satisfied he leaves stuffed toys or Barbie’s for me to play with. I didn’t understand at first until I googled “Is it normal for my dad to touch me?” and I learned about “molestation” and “sexual abuse”.

I asked my mom about it and she started crying.  My mother explained it wasn’t normal for my father to sexually violate anyone let alone me, his own daughter.  My mom confronted him about it, he denied it saying I was “a filthy liar” and “a foolish child with no idea what she was talking about.” My mom motioned me over, pulling up my shift showing the dark purple bruises and teeth marks across my belly and hips to him. By my father's reaction, she knew he did it and I didn’t do it to myself.

My mom also saw the deep scratch marks up and down my arms and across my belly only they were newer. She asked me what happened and I told her, “I wake up feeling red water coming from my arms, and the same red water under my nails. They were boo-boos I put little band aids on them, so you don’t worry.” When I finished explaining only tears fell from her eyes, she put me in therapy only it didn’t help. I never talked about my problems to a stranger who didn’t know anything about what I have been through. I stopped going, I was at the age the damage was done and no amount of talking would help.

If she had stopped it sooner when I was younger and more naive maybe.  I would go to school arms wrapped in bandages from my elbow to wrist, to hide the deep scratches I would inflict in my sleep. I never have had any friends, people see the bandages and judge me by the outside glance.  If they knew what happened they wouldn’t be so cruel to me about it, I met a boy younger than me who was in 6th grade. His name is Carl Grimes. His father Rick Grimes is a King County Sheriff's Deputy.

I talked to him about my dad, and he got him arrested. Freeing my mother and me, I started to cultivate Carl and being good friends with him. Until his dad was shot by a bad guy, and fell into a coma. Shortly after this hell started we got separated in the evacuation of Atlanta, I lost my mom and ran to the hospital where Rick was to see if I could get him out of there. He was still in his coma I tried to wake him only to fail.

I knew he was alive, just not when he was wake up. So I closed the wooden door then I pushed a heavy bed in the way of the door to keep him safe from anyone or anything trying to get at him.  I left the hospital to go find my mother before I would head to a vantage point in the hills or mountains to late this nightmare out. I never did find my mom so I could only hope she got out of the city. I found a gun store raiding the gun cases, and taking some silencers carefully leaving a couple for anyone who needs one.

I didn’t need them all just two were good, it’s a one fits all thing for me. I took all the ammo filling a duffel bag with supplies for the road, I ended up meeting a black man by the name of Morgan Jones and his son Duane. I stayed with them for a day or two before I went off on my own. To find some food, water, and knives. I soon discovered a house of a knife collector lucky me right?

The person had tons of different knives, butterfly knives, a bowie knife, many different machetes, throwing knives, all kinds. I took all of them putting them in the duffle with the guns with the covers on, obviously.  I had three full duffle bags of weapons, food, and water by the time I went up into the hills for cover. I found a big group of people among them I found Carl and his mother Lori. Soon after I had been there Rick woke up and saved the people that had went out for food and such.

I kept my secret stash of food and such in my tent hiding under my pillows and blankets.  I practiced using the throwing knives on the trees around the camp also marking our safe zone for the other kids who were much more sheltered than I ever was since this started. I remembered to grab the chef’s kitchen steel knife sharpener before I left that collectors house so I can keep the knives I use ready for a fight at any moment.  Carl and Sophia have been allowed near guns let alone knives or hatchets, I let them watch me throw them at trees and I let Carl try only for his mother to yell at me.  Lori wasn’t very smart for thinking I wouldn’t teach them how. Sophia didn't want to learn but Carl did so I secretly taught him out to hold and use a knife.

Telling him “Just because you can kill someone, doesn’t mean you should.” he understood so I gave him a small knife to keep in his jean pocket for safety. Rick and some of the others explained Merle, Daryl Dixon's older druggy brother had been left on a rooftop to die. Daryl wasn’t very happy about that so they went to go get him only he wasn’t there. They found more people who stole a bag of guns Rick had dropped on his way into the city before he was swarmed by walkers. Glenn later got him out, forcing him to leave the guns.

The group went to the prisoner's group’s base getting the guns back and returning here. A herd of walkers attacked the camp killing and infecting a lot of our people, I kept Carl and Lori safe until the gang returned.  We killed all the walkers and impaled the head, only Sophia's mom Carol killed Ed her abusive husband. Jim was bitten and hadn’t died yet so we fought over his life deciding to move to the Center for Disease Control in hopes of finding a cure and saving Jim's life. In the end, Jim asked to be left behind to turn to see his family again.

The Morales' family separated from us because they decided to go look for their relatives. I and the survivors reached the CDC complex only to find it locked, walkers started to close in on us. But Rick refused to leave as he said that the security camera was moving. Shane finally convinced Rick to leave, but the doors opened at the last minute saving us. I, Rick, and the survivors filed into the CDC lobby meeting Dr. Edwin Jenner at the door with an automatic gun.

"Why are you here, and what do you want?" Jenner asked us. "A chance," Rick said simply. "That's asking an awful lot these days," Jenner replied, he agreed to allow us in if we provided a blood test. "Grab your things," He told us. "Once this door closes, it stays closed." Rick agreed and with that, we followed Dr. Jenner to the building's basement control center. We soon learned he was the only doctor remaining after most left and or killed them. Leaving Jenner alone with Vi his computer system, each of us gave a blood sample to the doctor seeing Andrea shaky and wobbly as she tried to stand.

We later feasted in the CDC's cafeteria joyfully drinking wine and liquor from the fully stocked fridge. We were beyond happy about finding a safe place to stay and a good meal. Glenn got drunk, much to Daryl's satisfaction. Carl tried his first sip of red wine. He hated it, to Lori's delight. Rick toasted Jenner for his hospitality, and the doctor quietly raised his glass.

I drank some too only it was lighter liquor than the others drank, it tasted awful but anything to help me forget the world.  I felt something wrong with Lori so I went to see her in the library, she was shaking and crying. I asked her what happened and she had told me it was Shane, Lori explained he really thought Rick was dead, telling her he loved her. Also, restating that he knew she would never have fled the chaos. Had she believed that Rick was alive which would have risked her and Carl's lives if she had stayed.

Shane tried to kiss her, grabbing her arm forcing himself on her until she screamed and scratched his face and throat. Leading up to me finding her, I may not have liked her much but that steamed me up. Knowing from experience that made me confront Shane about it, I told him “Touch her in that way again, I will kill you. Or better yet tell Rick and he will.” leaving him to ponder that the next morning. Everyone was hungover and Daryl was the worst, Rick noticed the claw marks on Shane’s neck and commented but Shane lied to him. Later Andrea said "We didn't come here for the eggs." leading Jenner to tell Vi to display the brain scans from "Test Subject 19."

The ultra-secret, though worthless, the video shows someone who was infected and allowed the process of reanimation to be recorded by the CDC, Jenner explained to us. The display showed the virus attacking the brain showing the "first event." when your brain goes dark; your body dies. Jenner fast-forwarded to the "second event" — TS-19's resurrection. "It restarts the brain?" Lori asked. "Just the brainstem, which is you doesn't come back." Jenner corrected her.

The Doctor explained after Dale asked what the clock was counting down to, the destruction of the CDC. He stated that in thirty minutes, the building would decontaminate and that it is too late to stop it since there is no fuel. Rick yelled at the group to grab their things and run as the emergency alarms start blaring. Before we were able to, Jenner locked us inside the control center. Dr. Jenner told us "There's no point in struggling," Jenner explained. Everything topside is automatically locked down.

"When that door closes, it won't open again - you heard me say that," he told Rick to specify. Once the Doc told us we weren't going to leave everyone started to attack him, Rick stopped Shane from killing him. Rick also demanded to know why Jenner stayed if he didn't think there was any hope. "I made a promise," Jenner said, to his wife — Test Subject 19, the woman in the photograph he looked at earlier, to keep going as long as he could. "I'm grateful," Rick said before he exited, but Jenner countered, "The day will come when you won't be." He shook Rick's hand and pulled him close, whispering something into his ear.

The group and I headed for the exit, but Jacqui stopped. "I'm not ending up like Jim and Amy," she told T-Dog and the others, tearfully telling them to leave while they can. Andrea said she was going to stay too, causing Dale who cared deeply for her to stay as well. We got to the main lobby we tried shooting the glass and hitting it with no luck until Carol pulled out Rick's grenade. We used that to break the glass and escape the CDC. I and the survivors ran to the cars, shooting at nearby walkers as they run.

We piled into their cars and are getting ready to drive away when, from inside the RV, Lori saw Dale and Andrea emerge from the building. Dale and Andrea ran behind a military blockade and took cover as the CDC erupts in a fiery explosion. Andrea looked numb but followed easily as Glenn desperately motioned them to the RV. The caravan full with us the survivors found the highway blocked by abandoned cars just as the radiator hose in Dale's RV burst. The group decided to make a stop to get fuel and supplies from the scattered vehicles. Rick saw a large herd of walkers coming in the group's direction.

Dale was stuck atop his RV, while the others hide underneath the cars. A walker heard Sophia crying and began chasing her. Terrified, Sophia made a run for it from under a car as two zombies chased her down a ditch through the woods. Rick rushed after the walkers, he reached Sophia first and asked her to stay hidden in a tiny hollow at the mouth of a stream. To allow her to sneak away while he lead the two walkers away.  When Rick returned for Sophia he discovered he was gone.

The group organized a search to find the girl before sundown. While marveling at a stag deer in the forest, Carl was critically wounded from a gunshot from a hunter. We rushed to his side, in a panic and soon found the hunter who shot Carl by mistake. Rick ran to seek help, carrying Carl on his arms while Shane followed them with the hunter, Otis that had accidentally shot Carl. We reached a farm and Carl is attended by an old man called Hershel Greene.

He found that the bullet has shattered into six fragments and he needed Rick's blood for transfusion. Hershel withdrew one piece, but he concluded that he needed surgical supplies to remove the other five fragments. Shane and Otis headed to a FEMA evacuation center at a former high school that is surrounded by walkers to get the medical supplies for Carl. Rick asked that they send Maggie Greene or Hershel's daughter to ride a horse to bring Lori back. The group agreed to spend the night on the road waiting for Sophia and travel to Hershel's farm in the morning.

When Lori found out that Hershel was a veterinarian, she was afraid of the fate of Carl. I stayed by Carl's side so Rick could eat and rest from all the blood he gave to his son. I felt something animalistic inside me, I looked outside the farmhouse window seeing the full moon shining back at me. I looked to Carl, without thinking I took my wrist biting it before placing it over Carl's mouth. Telling him to drink and not open his eyes, he listened to me drinking some before I removed it.

I told him just to rest and that everything would be ok, for Shane and Otis would be back soon. I watched the color return to Carl’s once pale green skin, it wouldn't last for too long. For he would need a lot of my blood to keep him alive. Until Shane's and Otis's return with the supplies to remove the bullet fragments. When Hershel Greene was ready to operate on Carl, Shane, with the necessary medical supplies, arrived without Otis. Shane then recalled how he was able to survive, how Otis gave his life for Carl's.

After the necessary surgery on the boy, Hershel informs Rick and Lori that their son is stable. Mr. Greene was amazed for how Carl was strong enough to hold on, stating he shouldn't have made it from the internal bleeding. I said it was the angels watching over him, being careful not to draw attention to the fact he was close to death before I gave him blood to heal him enough to survive. When Carl woke up he told his mom all about the deer not even caring he got shot. I smiled playfully roughing up his hair, calling him squirt and to never scare me like that again.

Hershel told Rick that as soon as they find Sophia and that Carl is fully recovered from his surgery, he wanted Rick and us to leave his farm. A week or so passed as we continued to look for Sophia but I felt what I feared she was dead. Only I knew we were only searching for a body, not a little girl anymore. For Carol's sake, I went with Daryl to look for her daughter I explained to him I could handle myself against the dead ones. Daryl and I came across a river or more like a creek with Sophia's doll floating on the surface.

I splashed in the water to fetch the doll from the water, I rang out as much of the cold liquid from the toy as I could. I put my nose against it, smelling for any sign of her. The scent was mostly gone from soaking in the water, only a faint memory remained. I followed my nose telling Daryl it was a hunch or gut feeling. The trail didn't go very far, we brought back a Cherokee rose for Carol to give some hope to the mother. With that, I told Daryl he couldn't go out alone and it bring me with him since I wanted to find Sophia knowing in my heart she was long dead.

Daryl and I keep looking for Sophia by horse, only the horse got spooked by a snake which knocks both of us off and causing us fall down the cliff. I landed on a hard rock breaking my shoulder, and Daryl having an arrow going through his side. I didn't cry out to concern Daryl who wasn't worried about himself. He tried to crawl over to me, only I forced myself up holding my shoulder still with my hand. I told him I was fine and he needed to either pull the arrow out or wrap it up to support it.

I smelled rotten flesh, a small group of walkers came out. I fought two of them because Daryl was immobilized, one came up from behind me knocking me down. Daryl came to my aid ignoring his wound saving my life, in return, I helped him get up the steep hill. Not before I slipped falling back down the ramp, hitting my head hard at the bottom knocking myself out. Daryl had to carry us both back to the farm I have no idea how he did it, never the less he did.
