Story goes, if two people share a papou star-fruit, their destinies become intertwined. But wouldn't Sora want to share his destiny with both his important people?
I don't think I recall a scene in the first game where he shared the star-fruit with Kairi (I beat Riku in that race on my first try, yo!!), but as evident by the game I bet Riku had a nibble at it too. Anyway, why not just make sure and let all parties have a bite?
