Description This is another protoceratid drawing I made.
The "Quadraffe" (Four-Horned) is based on Syndyoceras cooki, with features of the African Giraffe and the endangered Okapi, with the feel for the North American Miocene Epoch theme. As for the pom-pom features for hair growths on the tips of its bony horns, I thought it might look cool. Honestly.
Lore holds that herbivores like protoceratids are associated with a Loa, so they must be hunted ritually and not conventionally. This special kind of hunting involves a spearhead or an arrowhead made from the bone of a sacred game animal of the particular kind you're hunting, as well as painting a twirling pattern on the wooden shaft with the blood of the same kind of animal. That same kind of blood must be applied to the face before the hunting takes place. The hunter must then say a prayer for the animal before shooting it in its vital spot, so it's considered a blessed kill. A headshot is out of the question, but a vertebral decapitation between skull and back with a well-placed shot is considered a good kill. After the animal dies, it's blood will be smeared onto the forehead of the one who shot it, with a pattern for a glyph based on the fur pattern directly on the animal's forehead. That way, the animal's spirit would have blessed the hunter a good hunter. Please note that Chalicotheres and Peccaries are considered sacred game too.
Hunters native to Zul'Aman are well aware of this practice, and they take great care when hunting these animals. Legends hold that the patterns on their furs serve as magical conduits when the skin is used for magical properties, such as an outstretched rug for a trance when inducing visions. The pelt is also used (albeit carefully) for creating leather-based clothing or armors for magicians of a variety. It is a sacrilege to mutilate the pelt, and a special ceremonial sickle is required for the safe skinning. The eyes of the sacred game like protoceratids are used as offerings to Loa or gods, as they contain magical properties that must be offered back as a form of thanks, before the meat gets eaten. It should be duly noted, however, that eating the meat is taken seriously: there is a curse that can be unlocked if the hunter were to disregard the ritual. When Garrosh Hellscream's Kor'kron orcs invaded Zul'Aman, they hunted these protoceratids as mere beasts and devoured their meat and disregarded the natives' warnings. This led to a curse that had transformed and devolved them into "Primal Orcs" as punishment for their testament. What's bad about these guys is that, like the wraiths drinking unicorn blood in the Harry Potter series, these primitive orcs would seek to devour the flesh of these magical creatures and are regarded as invasive and must be culled.
Otherwise, eating the meat is perfectly safe, so long as it is hunted ritually.
Primal Orc This is also in reference to the Triaffe, which was based off of Synthetoceras tricornatus.
