: In depth :

Russet-Echo is the kind of tom who’s always wearing a smile. He’s often full of jokes, laughter, and a surprising amount of wisdom. He had to learn how to fight without such brute force since Barkface was a much larger opponent than himself. Hence, he learned how to use the trees and environment to his advantage. Channeling his speed into a weapon as well as using it for such things like hunting or outrunning his siblings after shoving them into a creek. Russet-Echo has many positive qualities that shine out to the other cats in his budding clan. While he’s still considered a young feline, he was raised with ideals that run deep in his veins. Ideals that no matter the past of a cat, if one can change and adapt to help the group then who is to say a kittypet is worthless. Although he is a smart and dependable cat, his opinions can end up sprouting controversy among others. He does his best to remain neutral towards many topics, but when asked his opinion he won’t shy away from what he really thinks about it. He can often be found walking around the camp or sometimes even taking a few patrols here and there. His activeness is duel-sided and be either being restless or even paranoid. He often claims that he enjoys the walks, but he’s often weighted with concern for an ambush. The last thing he wants is to relive the loss from only a few seasons ago.

: Pre-Group History :

Honeytail and Smokecall, a pair of rouges who were inseparable. The two of them lived among a network of rouges in the valley. Smokecall was a fierce combatant, while Honeytail would often fight with words. Alone they were strong, but together they were a force to be reckoned with. When their kits were born, there were plenty of eyes to watch over them so that outside rouges and predators wouldn’t snatch them up. Now the kits born Smokecall was now reliant on her mate Honeytail to do most of the hunting. On one such hunting trip, Honeytail got into a scrap fight with a rather feisty rouge who nearly claimed his life. If it wasn’t for his loud yowl and pals coming to the rescue he may not have made it back to his mate. The group grew tighter as Leaf-Bare came upon them. They would plan where to meet up to pile the kits together so that they could all keep warm and safe under the watch of a rather large tom named Barkface. Of the ten kits, Russetstripe enjoyed the company of Barkface the most. While the tom could be a grump at time it was also easy to melt his cold stare with a few paw swipes to the leg. During Bare-Leaf, three of the ten kits didn’t make it from sickness.

As the hardened weather was fading and New-Leaf was well on its way the remaining kits became far more curious about the world they were in. Which meant more eyes needed to watch the kits as well as teaching them how to call for help if another cat was trying to take them away. Smokecall and the other mothers were a rather concerned bunch. They had a bunch of rather rambunctious kits to watch after while also trying to fend off the waking world. The rouge group started to travel together, hunt together, and even share tongues together. Russetstripe and his siblings were being raised in a group who valued bonds between cats, even if the bond wasn’t blood it was treated as such.

As the seasons passed when their group began to open a little more to the needs of others. They would aid other rouges, every now and again they would take in a kittypet and try to train it to fend for itself, and finally they would let the younger cats go exploring around. Russetstripe and his siblings were with Barkface most of the time they would go out exploring now that they were older. Russetstripe excelled in clever fighting, while his sister excelled in brute force. Copperpelt often preferred to play than to fight. Even the three of them would extend kindness to others. It was just how they were raised. Russetstripe even became friends with a kittypet named Sasha, who later changed her name to Thunder. However, being friendly can have its costs.

It was a lightly clouded evening when Honeytail and Copperpelt went out to go find some extra prey. Russetstripe was trying to sneak up behind his sister to scare her. But when he opened his mouth to give a yowl, a yowl from the distance echoed instead. Quick on his feet, he and his family ran to follow the sound. That’s when Copperpelt smashed right into Rabbitstep. The siblings, panicked now, all had hair standing on end and poised to strike. However, when realizing it was just their brother they nearly calmed among each other. Until Copperpelt started spouting that a group of rather large rouges were coming right for them. A yowl started, but was quickly ended. Russetstripe put two and two together. He had a choice to barrel into an unknown force or try to warn his group friends. Before he even got a word out his mother, blinded by fury and fear, went speeding through the bushes. His sister and brother looked to him for a signal. Russetstripe was about to make a call when he smelled blood and a foreign stench waft up around them. With quick thinking, he called for them to run. The three went sprinting through the brush and headed for where the group had been settled. Russetstripe demanded that all needed to move to the abandoned Two-Leg place as fast as their legs could carry them. When others questioned Rabbitstep spoke about the incoming danger. Panic and rage rose among the small cluster of cats, but there was no time for it. Russetstripe, the young tom, began to demand fighters to give the others a chance to flee. And those who flee should move swiftly. Copperpelt went with the group who fled while Rabbitstep and himself remained back to try and divert the other rouges.

The fight came to them in a heartbeat it felt. Claws were flying, hissing echoed through the forest, and cats were fighting for their lives. In the mix of blood and fighting was Russetstripe. The tom was teamed with Thunder in a heavy fight with the a rather viciously fighting rouge. The one thought on his mind was why. Why were these rouges so sighted on their little family group? The answer came in a way he didn’t exactly want. Russetstripe was knocked away from the rouge only to be pinned by another. Thunder was quickly outmaneuvered and pinned. The rouge who pinned her declared that kittypets didn’t belong in the forest. That the land was… Sacred only for those of the blood of the ancestors. Furious Russetstripe did his best to free himself but failed and received a nasty claw to the back of his ear. When the yowl of his friend ceased with a choke, it felt like the earth around him deafened. Was this the only reason they attacked? Kittypet or not Thunder was just as capable and helpful to their group as any other ‘forest born’ cat. With a stroke of luck Rabbitstep managed to get the rouge off him and the two took the she-cat rouge down. They lost a few other close group members that evening, it stung deep in Russetstripe’s chest.

On one side, he was proud to have others so close to him that were willing to defend each other to the death. But on the other, the group had dwindled in numbers greatly. Kits were without a mother or father. Some parents were going to be informed that their offspring had passed on. It felt so needless. As the remaining fighters regrouped with the others the sea of emotions mixed and swirled in the cats that night. Barkface that night pulled Russetstripe aside to give him encouragement. Speaking of how his parents must’ve rubbed off on him to be able to be so commanding of cats even older than himself. The next morning after mourning and sharing tongues, Barkface suggested that Russetstripe be a Leader-In-Training while they looked for a place to settle themselves into. While some of the older cats suggested Barkface or even other cats, Barkface stood firm that Russetstripe still had the heart to become a leader. But he accepted becoming the leader of the small band of rouges. That day they traveled away from the Abandoned Two-Leg Place and headed for the forest. A cat or two left the traveling pack, but most remained.

Between the absence of the faces of his group and the hole where his parents used to be, it felt like being the up-in-coming leader was going to be the hardest mountain to climb. As moons began to pass the young tom was learning alongside his siblings how to navigate, manage, and become more responsible. Copperheart became more inclined to tend for kits while others hunted, Rabbitstep became one of the better fighters, and Russetstripe was a budding leader next to Barkface. However, he began to have strange dreams. Some were of a place, a cave, where these glowing cats would stand by. Other dreams were of a camp spot, with cats of all kinds residing there. The smells would always be familiar yet the cats themselves would appear as strangers. After the dreams became a regular occurrence Russetstripe approached Barkface about them. Questioning why they kept repeating or what they could possibly mean. The dream with the cave always felt like he needed to find this place. But where would he even start for? Thankfully for him, a few of the rouges knew of tales of the past. Of a place that cats would go to speak to those beyond. The Cave of Echoes, as one of them said. Russetstripe could feel a surge of energy when he heard the name. Maybe there he could get answers. Departing Barkface’s side he left with Juniper, a wise older tom who had told Russetstripe about the cave. It would take some considerable time to reach the cave, but by the end of the trek it was more like Juniper was being led by Russetstripe. Deep inside it felt like instinct. The moon was just peeking into the sky when the duo arrived. A daunting feeling rushed through his pelt as he stood at the mouth of the cave. Yet his feet carried forward. Curious to see if he could finally find answers to the questions that were plaguing his mind.

-Leader Ship-

The night prior to the day of being appointed leader of MapleClan, a dream descended upon him. Whispers of glowing cats walked alongside him. They spoke of a place for the group to lay themselves and claim it as a home. A place where a clan can begin to grow. Waking with a heavy breath, Russetstripe felt torn between his choices. He could keep the group wandering about and therefore have a better chance of avoiding being ambushed. But if they could stay in a permanent place then perhaps they could be strong enough while also grow in numbers. A permanent place could mean offering shelter and help to those who need it most. When he went to ask Barkface for advice, the towering tom only laughed. While Russetstripe was originally offended by his mentor laughing, he realized that… He was the leader now. He was to call the shots. If the cats in EchoClan were showing him where to start, then who is he to refuse the help.

Being in a position such as leader was frightening, challenging, and overall hardship he never thought he would have been in. When they first arrived at the empty camp every cat was exhausted and ready to get some rest. All together they slept, except Russetstripe. He felt nervous and directionless as a leader. So many lives counted on his choices. When exhaustion finally found him, a dream came to him from EchoClan. There were many cats at a gathering, there were four leaders with all kinds of warriors and cats who knew how to tend to the sick. He saw himself among the four leaders. Behind the four leaders glowing cats sat and stared. Yet his dream self was looking forward in confidence. Within the dream, he turned around and saw the mouth of a cave. The Cave of Echoes. Within were the leaders once more. All laying while EchoClan cats spoke among whispers. The dream ended abruptly as Barkface woke him as the sun was rising. Perhaps another visit to the cave was due. But first, he needed to make sure his new camp could be safe and protected.

A few moons passed under his leadership. Cats began routines, those with knowledge of herbs began to section themselves and collect for the sake of the budding clan. The dream had been pushed into the back of Russetstripe’s mind as he was a part of shaping the cats to become a clan. When other cats began to seek shelter, and offer their help, the numbers began to grow steadily. Before this would have shaken Russetstripe. But now he welcomed the challenges of leadership. Three days before a full moon Russetstripe’s dream reappeared. EchoClan called for him, chanting his name in whispers. It was time to make the trip once more. This time when he emerged from the cave, he had now been announced Russet-Echo. The name given to leaders who have been given EchoClan’s blessing.

As he returned to his camp, MapleClan became official as he declared it to them. From that day on they were to uphold codes and honor the ancestors that have given them the blessing. Cats from all ages and backgrounds rejoiced in the news. Later that day Russet-Echo was sitting where he had given the announcement. It struck him then. The faces of cats he had seen in dreams. The faces and voices were familiar and their scents were like family. A warmth spread across his chest in knowing that EchoClan had sent him the dream moons and moons ago, just so he can appreciate how far they had come. From a cluster of lonely rouges to a clan that was eager to grow.
