Description
Well I figured that if I'm going to join CGSociety, I'm going to need to improve and develop some more "hardcore" skills in photoshop rendering. Most of my series are very stylised, because I've always felt that charismatic visuals are more appealing than stark photo-realism, however, on CGSociety, it appears that stark photo-realism is the name of the day.
So if I'm going to draw any anthro pictures on CGS, they'd better be pretty impressive...
I guess that the best series to redevelop for CGS would be Tech Sector. For one, the characters are at human proportions, and two, I tried to begin with a more realistic style in the first place. The character design can get quite detailed as well and it's a fairly mature story with a potentially interesting plot (blending anthro with high tech ninjas and psychological paranormality) so now Tech Sector is going to get ANOTHER redux...
Instead of drawing Holly again, I decided to go for Sighanu, because he's more detailed and a very important character in the story. This is the second time I've ever drawn Siggy properly. (I sometimes used to sketch him roughly when I was grumpy or feeling unhappy about something, but never complete sketches)
His costume got some slight changes, but not much. I believe he looks a lot more feral now, and definately more menacing.
I'm submitting this as a guilt post at the moment for being inactive lately, but when it comes to lining and colouring, I intend to give it my all to make it as photorealistic as I can.
Anyway, here's his story again:
At a young age he was abducted by a cult, who were studying the link between the solid and demon worlds. By subjecting him to torrentious amounts of mental and physical depravity, restraint and anguish, the idea was that as he relinquished all hope for himself, his mind would shatter in such a way as to create a rift between both worlds. What they didn't count on was the fact that Sighanu himself would absorb this rift and transform into a demonic entity with the ability to actually create psychological realities. After the transformation, he easilly escaped as the cult fell apart, and now he just attacks people randomly in their sleep and sucks them into his little world so he can feed off their fear and despair in order to appease his own pain.
Holly encounters Sighanu when she goes to investigate a number of deaths in an appartment (believed to be the work of a serial killer) but he makes no attempt to attack her, and leaves. She is fascinated by his unpredictable manner and tries to understand him. The big question is, is he still pure enough to be saved, or is he just an empty shell?
Reguardless of this, Sighanu is extremily powerful and can create mazes of pure evil within the blink of an eye. Physically, he's also a chore to fight.
Wish me luuuuuck!! I'm gonna try and improve again!
Tech Sector and all related characters are (C) Ryanide 2006, do not distribute or steal this work, despite the commons licence, kay?

feral? that doesn't even seem like the word to begin to describe him o.o
i like the way you did the wide eye. like he's ready for an attack at any moment
his left foot looks out of proportion. like, it's really small or something. =\ it's prolly just the angle but eh.
and is the stake supposed to float there? or does it like, drag on the ground when he's walking?
and good idea for going towards the realistic side of art. many colleges (here atleast) look for that kind of stuff just to see how impressive you are. it also helps a lot when you're going for some job interview that involves that kind of thing.
and i really like his costume. it impresses me

I did have a bit of trouble with those feet. Because of the shredded material there, it was difficult for me to judge where his leg was going. I may extend the foot out a bit more, I guess.
The chains and chords float, as he has total control of them. They're more or less extensions of his body as they became part of him when he underwent the transformation.

i didn't think the shredded material would have anything to do with the feet 0.o
but if you move that line on his left foot up a bit more, then it would look a bit better i believe
'cause it's like, one's long and the other's short and it gets really confusing :-\
otherwise it's a very nice piece. :iconeccen9: is allowing me to copy her work so i can try and get better at drawing. i'm going to try to get into an advanced art class right away next year. (i have no true are classes right now. only graphic design o.o) so i'll atleast have something for a portfolio when i go to college.
ugh. i really need to start drawing -.-

YAY! HE CAN BE SAVED! GO HOLLY!
He still lookes awesome, the chains and tattered bandages/clothing makes him look...demonic? Dun know the right word...
Plus im a fool for random romances and hopless lost situations with miracles...
Meh i just hope Holly dosen't get killed, i hate random storys that end in a huge "omg everyones dead" plot.
Kinda like Wolf's Rain, great journy to "paradise" and then...
BAM!
Everyones dead...
BUT TOBEO GOES TO PARADISE! YAY!

I hate that kind of ending >_< I generally don't like killing off important characters, either, but sometimes you have to if the story is going to have impact.

Im fine with killing off, its a good twist to plots/storylines, but not a huge apocalypse ending with all the characters dying off at once...
death is good!

Normally, I would try to add some manner of constructive criticism to this, however this is purely a line a drawing. As a line drawing, I sincerely doubt that there's anything to be improved that wouldn't be strictly speaking a 'stylistic' complaint.
I WILL say that in the bandages, and maybe a few other spots, you may wish to add some kind of hashing-very small, and only as a spot treatment where you might see the qualities of the material from the way the light hits it. Stylistically, considering the photo-real element you're trying to attain, I'd say the anime inspired hair is pretty iffy, but that will depend much more on color and shadow than anything else.
Obviously this is just a sketch, so I'm going to assume you're going to 'ground' him with some background work as opposed to letting him float in space.
Positioning and spatial usage is very solid, although I would go so far as to say that the leg in the foreground could even be twisted a little more to the right (that'd likely be his left) to improve on balance characteristics, though it might simply be a trick of the angle.
I'd also consider adding some texturing to the stone spike, though that could just as easily be accomplished through shading.
So we're clear, I'm not bashing this in any way. I'm trying to state the things that I see that COULD be improved, but at a proto stage like this, you still have half of the decisions to make yet.
It's a very cool picture, though. I especially like the story of who he is and how it happened. He sounds like the sort of person I actually meet every once in a while.

Ryanide In reply to LazarCotoron [2006-12-04 22:54:06 +0000 UTC]
Oh of course. I prefer to stay with the very basics of outlines and add the textures once I've actually begun colouring. The hair will not remain blocky, but it does hang there in clumps because it's wet with blood at all times. The fluffy bits on top will be more hairy looking. I still want to get a slight anime look without it being too cartoonish, similar to the official Final Fantasy X art.
I had no end of trouble with those $@#% feet and hands. I'll look into the sizes and give or take a little for the final product.
Thanks very much for the advanced crit, it's extremily helpful and also quite rare. (Even if advanced crit is on, tee hee. XD)

Wow, awesome character! The detail is exceptional. All f the wires are a good touch as they mass of them swaying like that symbolises his power and control. Thin lines depict more sinister meanings that thicker lines. The loin-cloth has well-designed rips in it. As for the anatomy... Perfect, as usual. But maybe his eye shouldn' be quite that far back. Move it just a tad forward and... yeah, I reckon it would look just right. The tail is very good, but fails to stand out. As=dd a little more thickness to the lines. You'll know how much. He has a very rigid body which is good, because he's a pretty evil-sounding character.
...
Lengthy comment, huh?

I love lengthy comments.
I did have a lot of trouble with the eye. I'll have another look at it. It's the angle of his head that threw me off, it's on a slight upward tilt.
The tail didn't have such thick lines because it was one of the things I didn't erase and re-draw about fifty times. XD

Hmp. I hate doing advanced critique for peoples who's drawing style is infinitely better than mine, 'cause I feel like saying to myself 'HAH! Like you can talk!', but I figure I'd give it a shot, cause it says 'advanced critique encouraged'.
Firstly, I do love this picture, and I'm sorry if anything I say sounds offensive, I really don't mean it to be!
The only thing I can say is that the anatomy looks a tad funneh around the left (his left) leg and the right (his right ) arm. I feel like his right hand should sorta face more towards us, because it looks rather uncomfortable and slightly unatural like that. The left leg, seems bent strangely. Though it may just be the fact that he's structured differently to what I'm thinking. Or it could be I'm wrong...
Well... yeah, that's it. I kinda feel pretty bad now, cause I sound harsh. Sorreh! You don't have to pay me attention or anything, so i'll just... yeah... stop babbling on now.

I can't remember how many times I erased and re-drew the hands and feet. I'm STILL not happy with the right hand, but the paper was going to break, so I just left it the way it was. I'll work on fixing that hand and the right foot in the final picture.

If anything, the picture does look really good. It's only when I examined it really, REALLY closely that I noticed that. I'm only picking at nits. Microscopic, barely noticable nits. The picture is well done enough that it shouldn't really matter, unless the people in CGSociety are uber perfectionists who like to make people feel low. Which I hope they're not. :/

I always like the look of these villain types. They offer so much to a story, with the question of redemption lingering from day one of the introduction.
The best part is the antagonist/hero of the story can fight him for several days on end, and he can be defeated in any number of ways.
1) The sidekick gets kidnapped, and just before the hero is about to be defeated, the villain is smacked upside the head with a blunt object by the guy he abducted. For the sake of fun, we'll say it was a pineapple.
2)The villain realizes his own errors and becomes some crazy dark variant of a hero. He however, may or may not be very good at it in the first place, and put himself in several 'interesting' situations!
"What do you mean I can't do that with his own leg? He's down for the count, isn't he? Oh don't give me that, he'll be alright in three weeks..."
3) While there might not be any hope of him having redemption as a hero type, there's always that last act of self sacrifice. Course, this might not work to his advantage as either that's the end of the character, or he somehow pulls it off and ends up in a full body cast for an undisclosed amount of time. And yes, I'd imagine in his case, he'd get rather itchy.
I'm sure theres more, but I think these make for a few interesting points. Anyways, keep up the good work
