I love those robots!! Panel 1 is amazing, and 2 is really cool with all the mechanical stuff and the way you spotted the blacks...Too bad you had to ruin it all with panel 3!!! Just kidding,

What lead do you use? or is this darkened in photoshop?

Pencils always scan too light, so I do auto contrast in Photoshop. But I use a 2B.

What would you recommend I use that has a less buttery taste?

Well, what you are doing makes sense because you aren't having those pages inked on-board (you interweb them to Cliff correct?). But for inking oneself, I recommend 3H. It lets you do light underdrawing, and the finished lines don't get dark enough to require erasing after they're inked.
Though, you know, to each his own!
