{ Home of the Prompt: pin.it/1M75QFJ }A loud crash came from downstairs, and Vance sat up, startled awake. He turned towards his night stand and fumbled around until he felt a pair of familiar wire frame glasses. He put them on before turning on the lamp at his bedside. He got up, and stumbled out of bed, cold hardwood flooring making him wince as he left his room and hurried down the steps. A few journals and his pen holder were all on the floor, and up on the table stood his more mischievous cat, John.
"Johnathan, really? You know better than to throw my things around." Vance grumbled, moving to shoo the cat. The cat's focus was over Vance's shoulder, watching the big smokey mass unfurl into a large beast, breath bursting out over the back of Vance's neck, sending a shiver down his spine. "Cold in here." He mumbled before leaning down and picking up everything. The cat hissed and jumped off the table, running through the house and away from the demon.
Vance finished straightening everything up and left the room, not noticing the huge shadowy figure he walked past. He headed back upstairs, ignoring the clicking noise the demon made as it slithered up the wall and over the ceiling, assuming it to be one of his cats clicking at him again. He went up to his room, sitting on his bed and shutting of the lamp before removing his glasses. The demon moved from it's spot on the ceiling, hanging down in frount of Vance, large fangs inches from his face.
Vance flopped back on his bed, wiggling until he got back under his blankets. He curled up on his side and relaxed, falling back to sleep quickly. The demon blinked, head tilting. It reached a clawed hand out, and touched Vance's cheek, the human simply shifting and tucking his head under the blanket.
The demon chalked the incident up to Vance simply being too tired. But the longer the demon was there, the more it realized that Vance was simply oblivious. The demon tried everything, flickering lights, walls bleeding, possessing objects. The human either never noticed, or in the case of the blood, assumed it to be rust and called a plumber about the bathroom upstairs. The cats noticed, very often hissing at or staring at the demon. Vance, however, just occasionally scolded the cats for hissing at him or each other.
The demon sat on the end of Vance's bed, watching the human sleep after spending ten minutes rattling the bed and roaring only to realize the human had headphones on and his eyes closed as he softly sang along to whatever he was listening to. The demon sighed and sat back on it's haunches, and that was where it found itself hours later, staring down at the human. "Sstupid human." The demon grumbled, reaching over and poking Vance's cheek again. "Don't ignore me." The demon's claw pierced the human's cheek slightly and the demon pulled it's hand back.
The demon studied the blood, slightly surprised, before drawing back. The demon stood, standing over Vance, claws extended. It had a choice, use it's new found power to make Vance truly know and fear it, or leave and haunt a new human. The demon took a deep breath, and made it's choice.
