Description Seen in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals, at the American Museum of Natural History. In an afternoon of October, in Great Smoky Mountains National Park of eastern Tennessee, a Virginia Opossum hangs out on a tree branch, snacking on berry-like fruit called persimmons, ripe and ready for the picking. Being an omnivore, the opossum eats anything it can get its paws on, both plants and smaller animals. A nibble tree climber, the opossum climbs with the help of an opposable toe on each hind foot, as well as a prehensile or “grasping” tail. The Virginia opossum is also the only marsupial native and found in North America.
