Description Found in the American Museum of Natural History. With its name meaning 'large-horned face,' this beast was given quite a list of names, including Brontotherium and Brontops. Though it resembled a rhino, it was larger than any living rhino species today (and it was very distinctly related to rhinos). The horn is believed to have been used by males to fight for the right to mate, though adults still used the horn to defend themselves and their calves from predators. Many of this animal's remains were found in South Dakota and Nebraska. In the past, some specimens were uncovered by rainstorms, causing them to be discovered by the Native American Sioux tribes, who gave the animal the name, thunder beast.
