Paint Tool SAI

"'How do you like the Queen?' said the Cat in a low voice. 'Not at all,' said Alice: 'she's so extremely--' Just then she noticed that the Queen wasw close behind her, listening: so she went on '--likely to win, that it's hardlyl worth while finishing the game.'"
- Lewis Carroll
Going through my old character designs again, while also trying to settle on a style that matches the stories they're in.
And you can't have an Alice-derivative work without the Queen of Hearts, no?
This design came pretty easily, starting with the heart shapes of her hair and bodice. The hair especially makes it easy to draw in some queen Elizabeth vibes, kinda following the lead of Tim Burton's version, so hello ruff collar. Besides, who knows what she could be hiding under that thing... or maybe she's nervous about her own head getting cut off? I continued to follow the flow of rounded shapes meeting to make points, hence the sleeves and bowling-pin like skirt. Both together and seperately these two pieces can kinda be seen as more heart shapes haha.
It wasn't until after I had settled on the bowling pin look that I considered a more traditional skirt, but that would be too Elizabethan and too obvious.
Next add some gold bling-bling and overtly dramatic makeup. Put everything in red, orange, and gold, with some blue details because those are the colors of playing cards. And also lowkey because if you know anything about tarot you know the hearts suit is equivalent to cups, which obviously has a liquid aesthetic. Besides, who says hearts have to be red all the time? Medical illustrations like to make veins distinct blue. Plus I already have a Red Queen so the more things to distinquish this hair-trigger womanchild with the cold fury of a chess queen the better.
Bonus: Croquet Flamingo.
I decided to start putting characters from this story with more exaggerated, bright, and lineless art as well, as a shout-out to Mary Blair (and to a less extent Eyvind Earle), who shaped the early Disney look, doing much of the concept and background design for various films of the 50s and 60s. Alice in Wonderland is particularly memorable for it's bright and acid-trippy design, so the more saturated storybook the better. If I ever do get around to making this game for real, it would certainly be a bit different doing all those CGs in a lineless yet vaguely anime style lol. I'm considering making the colors more aggresively bright like I've been seeing in a lot of otome games these days, but this is mostly to focus on the character's design anyway.
