I skimmed this, but it seems like you think this is a matter of jealousy.
It isn't.

No, not really I just pointed out one of the aspects that lead people into doing agressive comments but it was directed to a general situation and not just this one case.
I do believe in criticism, what I don't agree with is the type of offensive comments people make. It's one thing to say "The knees need some work, they look weird." and other is going crazy over their shape and offend it, you know? When I mentioned jealousy it was not especifically about this DD but to all other DD's. I've seen many offensive comments that simply went something like "You suck, this should have never gotten a DD! You suck yadda yadda".
I mean, criticism is part of any artist's growth, now being offensive just for the fun of it, it's senseless.

No, no, I distinctly remember reading a part where you made a strawman that went "Why did this get a DD and I didn't!?"

Thatu In reply to Draconis-Wyrm [2010-09-14 06:11:13 +0000 UTC]
Maybe you misunderstood me? I was trying to say that people that criticize this sort of work do that out of jealousy but not in the sense of personal jealousy like "I should have gotten this DD" but in the sense of "Why have this gotten a DD when there are so many other things that deserve more?" - saying like that now I understand I kinda didn't make any sense, lol. What I meant though is that we want to see what we like as DD's; it's a natural thing -the jealousy I was refering to was a sense of "betrayal" (And I'm using the term very vaguely here) people sometimes feel when there's a DD they can't comprehend or don't exactly like it.
As I said before, I'm ok with criticism or with people that see a DD and don't like it and comment on it. I remember one particular DD a girl once posted of her and her mother naked with their backs turned to the camera and a guy commented "this is sad; it doesn't make me happy at all to see the comparison between youth and aging. If anything, this makes me disgusted." or something along these lines, I can't really remember; the thing is the comment wasn't criticism nor was it a nice review but it was a nice review in the sense that it showed the person's reaction to the photo. Art is supposed to do that, right? Criticism, when done with good reasons or -even without them -but presentend in a polite, nice way it's ok by me; I just don't see the point of offending an artist's work just because the guy got a DD. Had the drawing remained "unknown" the worst type of comment it'd get would most likely be a "the knees are a little weird".
Did I make sense now? I know I rant a lot, I'm sorry.

So you ARE saying it's about jealousy!
In which case my first comment stands.

As long as you understand that I'm not saying it's about "Hey, it should have been me in there", then sure, whatever rocks your boat, dude. But I honestly believe that, even if it's not your case, there are tons of childish people who comment (among many other reasons other than just for the love of trolling) simply out of spite.
If we don't agree, then that's pretty much it, right?

The thing, I don't think people are saying she has weird knees out of any kind of jealousy.
I think it's because she has weird effing knees. They look like scaleplate on an alien.

Erdile In reply to ??? [2010-09-14 02:24:03 +0000 UTC]
That dog art was proven fake, it was made to provoke people.
And failed anatomy does not equal style, moron. Artists should develop styles AFTER learning how to make goddamn knees
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
Thatu In reply to Erdile [2010-09-14 02:54:32 +0000 UTC]
The dog thing was presented as art and it was considered art exactly because it was presented as such. If the "artist" did that to "provoke people", I'm assuming he had in mind pointing out exactly the fact that if anything can be art than cruelty could also be art...An art troll, I guess. What I intended to say with that is that nowadays we have this concept of "freedom of art" so let this artist be, let them have their art recognized by the community, there's no need to offend it.
I do agree with you that artists should know anatomy, that they should study and commit but you never get at "the top" of art, artists are all under constant improvement; what's the point of offending the knees the guy drew just for offending it? The artist got a good result from his piece regardless people's opinion on the knees - as I said; it had good colors and a good lineart. So, if the knees he or she draws aren't "normal", just let them be. Not all anatomy mistakes are part of a style but they are in some cases (anime and manga, for instance), so what's the point of simply offending the artist and being rude to people (for instance calling me a moron when I haven't even offended anyone nor used any bad words) if this isn't bring any good?
It's ok to not like an artist's style or to find flaws in people's drawings but -and maybe this is just my opinion - to waste time posting an offensive comment about one or two things only because the drawing got good feedback, sounds to me a lot like jealousy, you know? Not the "I can do better deal" but just the simple "I can't believe this sort of thing gets a DD when that other doesn't..." A DD it's just up for a day and the artist didn't even have any saying in it being chosen or not so, what I'm trying to point out is that art doesn't have to follow a pattern to be good art and, even if it isn't good art; offending it with no reason is simply silly.

Erdile In reply to Thatu [2010-09-14 17:29:55 +0000 UTC]
It does not matter style is nice and the lines are clean, like in this piece, if the anatomy is shit.
A basic grasp of anatomy is required before creating a style, and I am not blaming the artist for the DD.
And I should overlook the failed knee knee anatomy simply because a lot of feedback from said artwork is positive? Hell no. Anatomy failure is inexcusable.

I hardly think that you're qualified to label someone as a moron for merely voicing their opinion. On a side note, it is common for unrealistic features to be part of an artist's visual style. Much of this image is cartoon-like and overdone; the girl's posture, the angles of her legs and shoulders, the definition of her arms. It only stands to reason that the way her knees are drawn would be part of that artistic style.

I hated what the guy did to the dog. Art needs limmits, hurting a human or animal life needs to be it.

And I agree with you on this topic, I used the case to present the idea that art is whatever people decide to present as art, you know? Art does need limits when it comes to cruelty but when it's something such as a harmless drawing; what's the point in judging a couple of knees you know?

@get over yourselves comments;
So now criticism isn't allowed anymore? Oh dear lord, quit being so butt-hurt over it. It's not like they're attacking it.
The knees could genuinely use work (and the elbows bother me too, but I'm not as sure), other than that the picture seems fine in whatever style this is to me.

Criticism is allowed but as everything else in the world it should be done in a polite manner, don't you think? It's one thing to say "Dude, the knees aren't good." and other to say "You suck, this DD suck, you should never be an artist" and all that blah blah blah. I think the "get over yourself" comments are meant for this type of people, aren't they?

Maybe I didn't read down far enough, but none of the comments I saw were straight up attacking. I think the worst may have been "THE KNEES LOOK WEIRD"
But I'll grant I may not be being fiar, after all I'll be damned if I'm going to look through all of a DD's comments

lol, yeah, no need to check through the whole thing. I'm sure there were offensive comments as well. I have no personal reasons to "defend" this DD, I just find wrong how people offend DD's just "because"; instead of pointing out things that are actually worth pointing out. u_u

Have you never really looked at RL people's knees? :U
They're weird lookin and knobby.
The art just seems like cartoony realism.

Your comment:
Have you ever heard of criticism? :U
It's usually when people dislike something, and think it can be improved.
It just seems not everybody likes cartoony realism.
So maybe that's why they're voicing their opinions like that, much like how people are saying they like this picture. Odd.
Get over yourself. Fuck o n o

wow, beautiful work ^^
I know you're probably sick and tired of hearing this, but the knees seem a little weird. Maybe it's just the style, maybe something else, i don't know *shrugs*
But all in all, it looks really great. The guitar, especially, was done amazingly well.
Awesome, keep up the good work ^^
