Lol, wouldn't that require a heatsink mounted to the back of her head then?

Derpwave In reply to SameAsUsual [2012-08-20 23:34:44 +0000 UTC]

Well yeah, you'd need to keep the pre-resistor outside the sculpture, and you would need at least 5mm space between the LED and the sculpture parts.

SameAsUsual In reply to Derpwave [2012-08-21 20:23:10 +0000 UTC]

That would be somewhat of a problem as the space in the head is just over 1cm in diamteter

Unless I use Pinkie-powers of course

Derpwave In reply to SameAsUsual [2012-08-22 17:47:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, in that case you have to stick to the 5mm ones.

(I'd totally mount a color-changing LED in there^^)

Thanks! I'm so thrilled you like it!

I know I won't be disappointed
And I don't worry at all about inspiration.
With this show and fanbase it's hard not to get inspired.

You'll hear from me if I decide to let her go

Weeeell... I think I'll keep it for a while and see how I feel about it then ^^

I find it extremely hard trying to value the things I make.
I mean, the materials used are pretty standard things.
It's the time spent that is the significant part, and that's so hard to determine the value of.

Got an idea?

I NEED to learn how to add LED's to my sculpts! TEACH ME Oh, Master of Pretty Shiny Things!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SameAsUsual In reply to DeadHeartMare [2012-08-20 20:16:05 +0000 UTC]

Lol.
It depends on what purpose the LED has.
In this one I had to plan for in the very beginning, adding wires along the armature, as well as ball of tin foil inside the head before baking the body.
When cured I had to open up the top of the head and starting to pull out the foil to make room for the LEDs.
When they were in place I had to switch to modeling epoxy, as another bake would damage the LEDs.
It's pretty fun to try to solve these kind of things

DeadHeartMare In reply to SameAsUsual [2012-08-20 22:05:50 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, EVERY sculpt I do is just a series of small problems I hafta solve along the way.. fun? Eh, maybe not what I'd call it, heh, I run into the same kind of 'fun' when I fold advanced Origami models.. and they say it's supposed to be relaxing and cathartic! HA! Whoever thought that must've not had to read pictographic instructions in another language before! XD Anyhoo, thanks bunches for the instructions! I still have NO IDEA how to make the acrylic eyes & horn (or whatever I decide to make light up) but the wires can be baked inside the sculpt? it doesn't melt at all? (the wire coverings I mean)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SameAsUsual In reply to DeadHeartMare [2012-08-20 22:45:26 +0000 UTC]

As long as there's no dead line I find it quite relaxing really. And satisfying when you come up with something that works really well

I used ordinary uncovered metal wire for this. I attached it to the armature usin some of the epoxy and small pieces of masking tape. Just make sure none of the wires are touching each other or the armature.
A multimeter is pretty helpful when testing this.

Here's a picture I took during this step: [link] (kind of blurry, the shiny wires are somewhat visible)

As for the acrylic pieces: I shaped them by hand using wet sanding paper and needle files.
The horn is made from a piece of rod and the eyes where cut to rough shape from a sheet and then sanded.
There's probably tons of other stuff you could use instead. I think there's some sort of semi-transparent polymer clay

Hope this helps a bit

DeadHeartMare In reply to SameAsUsual [2012-08-21 05:30:06 +0000 UTC]

Ahh! That was incredibly helpful, Thanks! I'm thinking of trying this out on a DJ PON3 sculpt for myself (DJ PON3 + LED's = YES!!!) The translucent Sculpey won't be nearly as bright & clear.. I have some & I've seen it baked. Light shines through it but not clearly, kinda like a lampshade.. it wouldn't work as well as the clear acrylic. EEEEE! CAN NOT WAIT TO TRY THIS! Thanks again and keep up the spectacular work! I'll be watching!

Oh wow. I want that really bad. If you would ever consider producing another one and selling it, might I suggest adding the Element of Magic crown?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SameAsUsual In reply to Alexstrazse [2012-08-20 20:08:24 +0000 UTC]

I planned to include the crown. But as usual things take more time than one might think, so I ended up skipping it.
It might be possible to make an add-on for this though...
